Callina Liang has had a whirlwind few weeks. The Canadian-Chinese actress, who first broke out in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence’, stepped into one of gaming’s most iconic roles as Chun-Li in Paramount and Legendary’s ‘Street Fighter’. The film, directed by Kitao Sakurai, hit theaters on October 16.

The release capped off months of intense preparation. Liang trained for 4 hours of kicking every day for 6 weeks before cameras rolled, wearing resistance bands on her legs to perfect Chun-Li’s signature moves. She has since said she still keeps up the routine because it became therapeutic and part of her life.

Now Liang is showing off a very different side of herself. In new photos shared to Instagram and circulated by fan account Celeb Fun, the actress trades martial arts gear for an edgy, all-black aesthetic.

In the first image, she poses against sheer curtains in soft natural light, wearing a black open-back top with buckled side straps. Her long dark hair falls loosely past her shoulders, paired with sharp winged eyeliner and glossy neutral makeup.

The second shot leans into a grungier, after-dark vibe. Seated in the back of a car, Liang wears a black distressed crop top with a light-wash ripped denim skirt, keeping the same dramatic eye makeup for a cohesive look.

The snaps quickly caught fans’ attention. The contrast with Chun-Li’s classic blue qipao and twin buns has made the photos stand out even more. It’s also a reminder of how much Liang’s profile has grown this year.

Before ‘Street Fighter’, she was best known for her breakout in ‘Presence’ and her role in the thriller ‘Bad Genius’. Liang has been open about what playing Chun-Li means to her. The character represented an image of strength she admired as a child, and she has described the chance to play someone who looked like her in a video game as a huge honor.

The physical work transformed her, too. She has said the role gave her a new level of confidence as an actor and that she now feels stronger than ever, having put on more muscle than at any other point in her life. She can even pull off Chun-Li’s Lightning Kick on her own.

The film opened at No. 1 at the North American box office with $31 million, adding $20.1 million internationally for a $51.1 million global debut. Against a reported $82 million production budget, that start has been described as so-so.

Reviews have been mixed, with some critics noting how quickly the story moves away from its tournament setup. Others have praised its colorful characters, faithful designs, and intentionally over-the-top humor.

Whatever the long-term fate of ‘Street Fighter’, Liang has clearly emerged as one of its biggest talking points. Her dedication to the role became a highlight of the press cycle, and her latest Instagram photos show she’s just as comfortable owning the spotlight off-screen. With her profile rising quickly, fans will be eager to see which project she takes on next.
