Amanda Seyfried Admits She Was Wrong About ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, but Still Doesn’t Regret Passing on Gamora
When James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ hit theaters in 2014, it introduced audiences to a ragtag team of cosmic misfits that included a talking tree and a gun-toting raccoon. Zoe Saldaña took on the role of Gamora, going on to play the character in multiple sequels and in the ‘Avengers’ films as the franchise became one of Marvel’s biggest success stories.
Amanda Seyfried, meanwhile, built an acclaimed career far from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for playing Marion Davies in David Fincher’s ‘Mank’, won an Emmy for portraying Elizabeth Holmes in ‘The Dropout’, and recently drew praise for ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’. But she very nearly took a much different path.
During a career retrospective with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Seyfried revisited her decision to turn down the role of Gamora, explaining that she was convinced the movie would flop. Her candid comments have since been making the rounds online.
“I think turning down ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was just so obvious to me at the time,” she said. “I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. And also they’re all in space.’ And I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad,'” she said at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
Seyfried freely admitted that her box office prediction missed the mark. “I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have,” she continued.
Amanda Seyfried explains why she turned down playing Gamora in ‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’: “I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree & the raccoon are talking to each other and also they’re all in space.’ I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad.’ I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have. And I just don’t want to spend all the time in the makeup trailer.” (via: @sagaftraFOUND)

Her reasoning went beyond the film’s commercial prospects. She added that she didn’t want to spend all her time in the makeup trailer, joking that she can’t sit still anyway and needs something to hold on to.
It’s a refreshingly honest take on one of Hollywood’s most famous what-ifs. Rather than dwelling on the franchise she missed, Seyfried framed the choice around the life she wanted to build outside of work.
The part ultimately became a defining role for Saldaña. Over the years, Gamora grew into a fan-favorite member of the team, appearing across the ‘Guardians’ trilogy, a holiday special and the ‘Avengers’ films.

Saldaña has since confirmed that she is stepping away from the character. She has said she is excited to see what comes next for Gamora and is grateful for how the films highlighted her.
Seyfried’s career path suggests her instincts served her well in other ways. Since breaking out in ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Mamma Mia!’, she has moved between big studio films, prestige dramas and acclaimed television, including ‘Big Love’, ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Long Bright River’.

Her retrospective also covered stories from many of those projects, offering fans a broader look at how she has navigated her decades-long career. In that context, her Gamora decision reads less like a missed opportunity and more like one of many choices that shaped her own path.

The comments have sparked plenty of conversation online. Some fans found her reasoning hilarious given how successful the franchise became, while others said her decision to prioritize family was deeply relatable. Either way, Seyfried’s story is a reminder that even the biggest hits can look like risky bets at the time, and that not every actor measures success by blockbuster box office alone.
