‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Showrunner Reveals What It Would Take To Return to Night City Again
When ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ debuted in 2022, it quickly became one of Netflix’s most beloved anime series. Studio Trigger’s adaptation of the ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ world followed David Martinez through a brutal, tragic journey in Night City, earning critical acclaim for its writing, characters, animation, and music. Its success even drew millions of new players to CD Projekt Red’s game.
After a 4-year wait, the franchise returned on October 20 with ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’. The standalone 10-episode story introduced an entirely new crew, including veteran edgerunner Weak Kingsley, Snake Nation netrunner D, Roman Carax, and Talia Yang, with Kai Ikarashi taking over as director from Hiroyuki Imaishi.
With the new season now streaming, fans are already asking the obvious question. Speaking to ComicBook, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor addressed whether a third installment could happen, and his answer was hopeful but cautious.
“There’s a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know,” Sztybor told ComicBook. He explained that CD Projekt Red’s approach is that there always needs to be a perfect story, along with a perfect director, artist, or studio capable of pulling it off.
“So if the stars align and [we] will be able to create something high quality again, then yes. But if there’s no perfect story or no perfect director with his or her unique voice, then maybe it will be just two ‘Edgerunners’,” he added.
Sztybor’s comments reflect the careful approach behind the franchise. Rather than rushing out sequels, the team seems determined to return only when a new story truly justifies another trip to Night City.

That philosophy explains the long gap between the first 2 seasons. The original story of David and Lucy was itself chosen after dozens of drafts and many hours of brainstorming with Studio Trigger.
In a separate conversation with GameSpot, Sztybor admitted he doesn’t know whether a perfect story will come, but insisted there are definitely more stories to tell in this world. He also said that if a new season moves forward, viewers can expect more threads from the wider ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ universe woven in.
‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ is set in 2078, a year after the events of ‘Cyberpunk 2077’. Sztybor has described it as a mirror of the first season, with Weak Kingsley’s arc essentially playing David’s story in reverse as a famous edgerunner who loses everything and has to start over.
The new season also pulls from the broader franchise. It features Sal Bigelow, a character first introduced in the ‘Cyberpunk: Big City Dreams’ comic book. Netflix now positions ‘Edgerunners’ as an anthology, with each season telling a new story through a new crew. That format could make a third installment easier to imagine, since it wouldn’t need to continue the current characters’ arcs.
Fans have also noticed small teases online. A recent community poll from the official ‘Edgerunners’ account included an option titled ‘The Next Edgerunners Legend’, captioned with a note that Night City’s stories are far from over, though it isn’t an official announcement.

For now, Netflix and CD Projekt Red have not announced a third season. Based on Sztybor’s comments, any future installment will depend less on demand and more on finding the right creative vision. Given how passionately fans responded to both seasons, there’s clearly an audience waiting. Whether that leads to a new crew of edgerunners remains up to the creators.
