Renate Reinsve has had a career-defining stretch. The Norwegian actress earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’, appeared in the horror hit ‘Backrooms’, and now stars in ‘Fjord’, the latest film from Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.

‘Fjord’ arrived with serious prestige. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and went on to win the Palme d’Or, handing distributor Neon its seventh straight win of the festival’s top prize. Neon released it in U.S. theaters on October 9.

As the film rolls out in theaters, Reinsve has been making the rounds to promote it. In new photos shared by Film Crave, the actress stunned during ‘Fjord’ press in a minimalist all-black look with a playful edge.

She wore a black zip-front mini dress with voluminous sleeves and contrasting textured panels, finished with a sleek gold zipper running down the front. Reinsve paired it with dark rectangular sunglasses, white socks, and black heeled ankle boots, letting her long hair fall loose.

The look balanced polished and offbeat in a way that suited the film’s intense, unconventional tone. It’s a refreshingly understated choice from an actress who has become a fixture of awards-season red carpets.

The film marks Mungiu’s first English-language project. Reinsve plays Lisbet, a Norwegian woman who relocates with her devout Romanian husband Mihai, played by Sebastian Stan, and their 5 children to her progressive, remote coastal hometown.

The family soon finds itself under scrutiny. When their adolescent daughter shows up at school with bruises, the community begins to question whether the parents’ traditional approach to raising their children is to blame, setting off a gripping legal and moral struggle.

Mungiu has described the project as a meaningful full-circle moment. “I started talking to Sebastian some eight years ago about doing a project together, and it’s very funny that this project that we’ve done now, it’s his first in Romanian, but my first in English,” he told Deadline.

‘Fjord’ also reunites Reinsve with Stan. The pair previously starred together in Aaron Schimberg’s psychological drama ‘A Different Man’, which competed at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film was shot mostly in Norway during April and May, with a supporting cast that includes Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli and Markus Tønseth. It runs 2 hours and 26 minutes.

Critics have largely embraced the film. The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus praises its knotty moral dilemma and superbly acted performances, noting that its chilly surface hides a heated humanity underneath.

Reviewers have highlighted the film’s refusal to offer easy answers. RogerEbert.com called it one of the few true conversation starters out of this year’s Cannes lineup, though not every critic has been convinced, with some calling it manipulative.

Beyond ‘Fjord’, Reinsve remains one of the most talked-about actresses in the industry. She has also been reported to have met with Marvel Studios about playing Moira MacTaggert in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, though nothing has been confirmed.

Whether on the red carpet or on screen, Reinsve continues to prove why she’s one of cinema’s most compelling performers. Her ‘Fjord’ press looks are simply the latest reminder of her effortless star power.

What do you think of Renate Reinsve’s all-black look during the Fjord press tour?
