‘Werwulf’ Arg Asks Fans To Point Their Phones at the Real Full Moon for Its Next Clue
Robert Eggers has never been a filmmaker who does things the conventional way, and the marketing for his next nightmare is following suit. ‘Werwulf’, the director’s medieval horror film set in 13th-century England, follows a mysterious creature stalking the land as local folklore becomes a terrifying reality.
Co-written by Eggers and Sjón, his collaborator on ‘The Northman’, the film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a cursed man tormented by his transformation. Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp and Ralph Ineson round out the cast, with Focus Features releasing the film on December 25 and Universal handling international distribution.
Focus Features has built the film’s promotion around the lunar calendar. In late September, the studio released the second trailer during the Harvest Moon and launched an alternate reality game at DevourethAllMankynde.com.
The game challenges fans to find a hidden sign across the film’s digital platforms during the 24-hour window surrounding each full moon from September through November. Players then decipher it and submit their answer on the website to progress.
Now the next phase is underway. As DiscussingFilm reported, the second clue for the ‘Werwulf’ ARG is live, and this time Focus Features has launched a Snapchat lens that lets fans scan the actual full moon to reveal the next sign.

In a statement to Bloody Disgusting, Focus Features confirmed that the website reopened at 9 p.m. PT on October 25, or midnight ET on October 26, giving fans 24 hours to figure out the next sign. Each step brings players closer to a mysterious prize that will be revealed at the November full moon.
The lens itself carries the film’s eerie aesthetic. It opens with the ‘Werwulf’ title in blackletter type alongside the promise that the film arrives only in theaters this Christmas. The stakes have been teased in typically cryptic fashion. According to the game’s own messaging, a rare reward awaits those who complete all 3 moons, though rewards are limited, vary by location, and are only available to participants aged 18 or older.

Focus Features has not revealed what the prize actually is. That secrecy has only fueled curiosity among horror fans eager to see what Eggers and the studio have planned. The October full moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, also brought an in-person event. Focus Features hosted a ‘Werwulf’ Full Moon Pop-up at The Brig in Venice, California, on October 25, offering exclusive merchandise designed with The Cinegogue.
The immersive approach has turned the release countdown into a series of smaller events. Instead of simply waiting for opening day, fans are being invited to follow the moon from one trailer beat to the next.

The film is being promoted as Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience, with the studio describing it as a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within. Much of the story has been deliberately kept in shadow since the first trailer dropped in June.
For film purists, there’s another treat on the way. ‘Werwulf’ will play in 35mm in select theaters on Christmas Day, and tickets are already on sale. With one more full moon to go before the prize is unveiled, the campaign is ensuring that ‘Werwulf’ stays howling in the conversation right up until its holiday release.
Would you take part in Werwulf’s full-moon ARG to uncover its mysterious prize?
