Long before audio dramas became a reliable source of TV adaptations, ‘The Black Tapes’ was helping define the horror podcast boom. Created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae, the series launched in 2015, ran for 3 seasons, and wrapped in 2017 after 30 episodes, earning a reputation as one of the genre’s most influential titles.

The podcast’s mix of paranormal mystery and investigative storytelling has long seemed tailor-made for television. NBC even developed a drama adaptation during the 2018-19 cycle, written and executive produced by Bae, Miles and Mathew Arnold, though that version never made it to air.

Now the story is finally heading to the screen. MGM+ has officially greenlit ‘The Black Tapes’ as an 8-episode supernatural horror investigation series, with ‘Game of Thrones’ alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau attached to star in the lead role.

As Variety highlighted, the original podcast has amassed more than 60 million downloads since its debut. That built-in audience gives the adaptation a strong foundation as the streamer expands its horror lineup.

Coster-Waldau will play Dr. Richard Strand, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past. In the series, Strand teams up with Alex Regan, an obsessed and relentless scientist, to debunk paranormal cases involving hauntings, possessions, disappearances, and sinister legends, otherwise known as the infamous black tapes.

The official description suggests the TV version will rework some elements of the source material. Notably, Alex’s profession differs from the podcast’s version of the character, hinting that the writers are reshaping the story for a new medium.

Fans of the original won’t have to worry about losing its creative DNA, though. Miles and Bae are returning as writers and executive producers, alongside ‘Leverage’ writer John Rogers. Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures and Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey are also executive producing, with MGM+ Studios producing the series.

The streamer is clearly confident in the project. “The Black Tapes crafts a compelling story around our cultural fascination with the unexplained, while delivering the cinematic, classic storytelling that MGM+ audiences expect,” MGM+ global head Michael Wright said in an official announcement.

The timing is notable as well. MGM+ is approaching the end of an era with its horror hit ‘From’ nearing its final chapter, making ‘The Black Tapes’ a potential new pillar for its genre programming.

Coster-Waldau is best known for playing Jaime Lannister on ‘Game of Thrones’, a role that earned him 2 Emmy nominations. He recently returned for the second season of Apple TV’s ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’.

His casting gives the series instant name recognition in a crowded streaming market. Many fans have already compared the premise to ‘The X-Files’, with a skeptical investigator confronting cases that defy explanation. ‘The Black Tapes’ is scheduled to begin production in Vancouver in January 2027. No premiere date has been announced yet.

When it does arrive, the series will be available on MGM+ in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Latin America. For longtime listeners, the adaptation marks a long-awaited moment. For newcomers, it could be the perfect introduction to one of horror podcasting’s most enduring mysteries.
