‘Phony’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained: Sonny’s Trap Hands Ellen a Direct Line to His Investigator
This ‘Phony’ recap starts with a teenager who is certain his mother is no longer the person she claims to be. Hulu’s mystery series from creator Nick Paley follows Sonny Cooke, played by Sam Nivola, who wakes up after a car accident convinced his mother Ellen, played by Connie Britton, has been replaced by an impostor, and nobody else can see the difference. The show premiered on October 20 with two episodes, and new episodes arrive every Tuesday.
This week’s installment, “Reverse Cuckoo Situation,” keeps Sonny and Ellen under the same roof for an entire day. Sonny devises a trap designed to catch Ellen in her lies, while Ellen reveals secrets of her own. The closing moments turn the trap back on its creator.
‘Phony’ Recap and the Trap Sonny Sets for Ellen
Sonny has been suspended from school after pushing Vogel at the dance, which leaves him stuck at home, and Ellen decides to take the day off to spend it with him. Sonny is not pleased. He is terrified at the idea of spending hours with this version of his mother.
He turns to his investigator Sharla, played by Meera Syal, who describes his situation as a reverse cuckoo situation and recalls a case involving a woman who got rid of a child’s parents and raised the kid as her own. Her guidance is to play nice for the day, which turns the episode into a kind of undercover mission.
Sonny asks Ellen to prepare a childhood favorite called chicken nummers, insisting she make it exactly as she used to, secret ingredient included. He tells Sharla the recipe is a test of whether Ellen remembers their shared history, much like the secret arm squeeze she forgot earlier in the season.
Ellen’s Secrets Go Beyond the Kitchen
Ellen hesitates, then retrieves the nutmeg and explains how she first made the dish when Sonny was in the hospital with meningitis. It sounds convincing until Sonny looks closer. After Ellen cuts her finger, he goes searching for a first aid kit and finds a recently written recipe with a reminder about the secret ingredient, along with a note about his medical history.
Ellen insists the notes come from a journal she kept during his first hospitalization, but Sonny does not buy it. Her phone also keeps ringing throughout the day, and Sonny overhears a tense call that gives him all the motivation he needs to go on the offensive. Ellen claims the calls are from Mark, the vice principal, though they clearly irritate her.
When Chloe arrives at the door, Ellen heads out for what she says is urgent care, but Sharla follows her and finds that she goes to a bar instead. There she hands something to a mysterious man, smokes a cigarette, and watches him drive away in a truck. Another recap describes the handoff as a large stack of cash, and the two appear to know each other.
The Dead Body Rumor Takes Over School
Away from the Cooke house, a different mystery is spreading through the hallways. The school rumor mill is working overtime after word gets around that Shovel supposedly discovered a dead body in the woods near the pond. Chloe does not believe he saw anything and is certain the story is made up.
The rumor also lands in front of Ellen. Her meeting happened at the same bar where the teachers were gathering for a night out, so she is invited to join them for a drink and picks up the gossip. She also runs into guidance counselor Justin, who asks whether she has contacted the therapist.
Classmates, meanwhile, are talking about Sonny’s erratic behavior, and many seem to enjoy watching his perfect image crack. Maliq Johnson, who plays Vogel, spoke to TV Insider about how the series gives adults a window into the complicated inner lives of teenagers who are trying to figure out life while also dealing with something strange.
Ending Explained and What Comes Next
Sonny receives a message from Weldon about a dead body party in the woods, and he and Chloe decide to attend because Sonny wants to see the corpse and has an idea who it might be. Because he knows Ellen can track him through the new phone she gave him, he turns off location sharing before leaving. The phone itself never makes it out the door.
Ellen returns to an empty house, discovers Sonny’s burner phone, and answers it when it rings, only to be met with Sharla. She does not get any specific information before the call ends, but the moment is a significant cliffhanger. Sonny set out to expose Ellen and instead handed her a line straight to his investigator.
The ending does not settle whether Ellen is an impostor. Her cash drop suggests she has secrets of her own regardless of whether she has replaced anyone. The premiere ending did not confirm that Ellen was replaced and did not rule out that Sonny is imagining things after a head injury.
Next week’s episode, “Vibes Are Rancid,” arrives on November 3. The first season runs eight episodes with a finale on December 1. Now that Ellen has spoken directly with Sharla, do you think she will confront Sonny about his investigator, or does that journal of recipe notes already convince you she is a stranger rather than a mother hiding something else?
