Who Dies in the Latest Season of ‘Tulsa King’ and Why the Writers Made That Call

The question of who dies in ‘Tulsa King’ gets an answer almost immediately this year. The premiere, titled “W.W.D.D.”, arrived on Paramount+ on October 16, 2026, and ended with a plane crash that changes the direction of the season. The loss lands on Dwight Manfredi at a moment when his empire looked its most secure.

The season opens with Dwight announcing Friedman Enterprises, a legitimate company whose name is an anagram of Manfredi, after he ended the previous season by dispatching his enemy Jeremiah Dunmire. That sense of momentum makes the fallout feel deliberate rather than random. Anyone searching for who dies in ‘Tulsa King’ will find the cast list altered in ways the show has not attempted before.

Margaret and Cal Deaths in the Premiere

The two characters at the center of the crash are Margaret Devereaux, played by Dana Delany, and Oklahoma Governor Cal Thresher, played by Neal McDonough. Both are shown asleep on a private jet while the pilots are unconscious in the cockpit and air traffic control tries without success to reach the plane. The trip was a flight to a Governors’ Conference on the Mariana Islands, with Margaret invited along by Cal.

Dwight’s sister Joanne wakes him with the news that the plane went down somewhere over the Pacific. One detail keeps the scene ambiguous. The crash itself is never shown on screen, which left room for viewers to hope the characters had survived.

The following episode, titled “Blind Rooster,” removes that doubt by confirming that both characters are dead and showing Dwight grieving his girlfriend. The loss also carries history. Margaret was the reason Dwight first crossed paths with Cal, which ties the two deaths together in a way the writers appear to have planned.

The premiere also featured a third death of a very different kind, when Buffalo mob boss Luca Fiorentino’s severed head is revealed in a bowling bag at a National Council meeting. That moment played as a show of force by another crime family rather than a tragedy.

Terence Winter Explains the Decision

The reasoning behind the plane crash comes from the people running the series. In an exclusive conversation at the New York premiere, returning showrunner Terence Winter told TV Insider that the goal was to place Dwight in the most vulnerable position possible, both in terms of danger and emotion.

The timing matters because Cal had just been named governor and Margaret had just won her ranch back thanks to her help getting him there. Ending both arcs at their peak makes the shock land harder. It also removes the safety net that Dwight had slowly built in Oklahoma.

Winter argues that change is the defining constant of ‘Tulsa King’, which frames the deaths as a continuation of the show’s logic rather than a departure from it. That view fits the way the season has been set up.

Stallone on the Deaths and Season Plans

Sylvester Stallone has been open about how personal the decision was. Speaking to TVLine, Stallone said he and Winter built the season around the question of how to make Dwight an underdog again. Their reasoning was that Dwight had become too successful, so tragedy was required.

Stallone also said the deaths were his idea and part of a larger plan connected to the recently announced fifth season. He compared the loss of Margaret to the death of Adrian in the ‘Rocky’ films, noting that he had been through something similar before. The comparison signals how heavily he expects the loss to weigh on the character.

Stallone said he wanted Cal’s replacement to be someone in power who would refuse to cooperate with Dwight and make life difficult for him. That choice puts the political side of the story front and center.

Fans had some warning that the tone would turn darker. Cast member Kevin Pollak teased that the season would bring more of everything, summing it up as violence, death and Stallone.

Amanda Clark and the Fallout for Dwight

The most immediate consequence is a change in who holds power in Oklahoma. After Cal’s death, Lieutenant Governor Amanda Clark, played by Gretchen Mol, steps in to replace him. She made her feelings clear before the crash by refusing to shake Dwight’s hand when they met.

Cal had also brushed Amanda off when she pushed him to meet with a billionaire seeking to build a large data center on farmland. With Cal gone, that disagreement may become her opening. The season is shaping up as a contest between a grieving crime boss and a politician with her own agenda.

The season runs ten episodes, with the finale set for December 18, 2026. That leaves plenty of time for the story to answer whether the crash was truly an accident. With Margaret gone, Cal replaced by a rival, and the crime families circling Dwight, do you think he can rebuild his position in Tulsa without Margaret at his side?
