‘The Rings of Power’ Showrunners Promise “Full-Metal Sauron” as the Dark Lord Drops His Disguises
For 2 seasons, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has shown Sauron as a master manipulator, slipping into new identities to bend Middle-earth to his will. Charlie Vickers’ version of the Dark Lord has relied on charm, lies, and patience rather than open tyranny.
That’s about to change. The Prime Video series returns on November 11 with an 8-episode season covering the forging of the One Ring and the origins of the Nazgûl. Episodes 1 to 4 arrive on premiere day, followed by episodes 5 and 6 on November 18 and the finale on November 25.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have now explained exactly what kind of villain fans should expect. During a set visit, they revealed that the team refers to this season’s take on the character as “Full-Metal Sauron.”
“He’s not pretending to be Halbrand. He’s not Annatar this season,” Payne told Nerdist, adding that Sauron is now the figure in black leather ruling from the great dark tower of Barad-dûr while he works to make the One Ring.
Payne also teased that the character will sink to even more deliciously evil depths than viewers have seen so far. After 2 seasons of operating in the shadows, Sauron is finally stepping out as the Dark Lord.

Vickers sees each earlier version of Sauron as the character being fully himself, simply committed to a different disguise. He described the first season’s take as grounded and earthy, the second as focused on wisdom and regality, and the third as built around power and fear.
The actor also called Sauron vain, saying the character wants to look good. This season, Sauron is alone after losing both Galadriel and Celebrimbor as partners, and Vickers noted that what makes him most frightening is the way he twists hope into a weapon.
That isolation shapes his story. According to Vickers, Sauron is haunted by Celebrimbor’s death and is trying to forge the One Ring on his own, with the season showing him fail again and again.

The new look backs up the “Full-Metal Sauron” label. Costume designer Libby Dempster said the character needed to be far more armored, with shoulder pieces featuring tortured souls and a gorget decorated with Fell Beasts.
For the first time, Sauron also wields weapons he has made himself. Master armorer Alex Francis said his sword, dagger, and polearm are made of volcanic rock and tie into Mount Doom, his throne, and his crown.
The production design leans just as heavily into darkness. Production designer Kristian Milsted explained that this early version of Barad-dûr sits on the slope of Mount Doom and mirrors Celebrimbor’s forge in Eregion, reflecting Tolkien’s idea that evil can only imitate.
Sauron’s throne is made from the melted helms of defeated elves, surrounded by black volcanic columns and a stained-glass window that forms an eye when seen from the right angle. Black Speech covers the walls, and the set is lit by torches and a dim red glow.
Beyond Sauron’s transformation, the season brings plenty of new threats. A clash with the Balrog of Moria is reportedly coming, with Simon Pegg voicing the creature, while Zubin Varla joins as the Easterling Khamûl.

Jamie Campbell Bower plays Celeborn, and Andrew Richardson plays Anárion, alongside returning stars Morfydd Clark as Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as Elrond. The hobbits won’t appear this time, keeping the focus on the growing shadow over Middle-earth.
With Sauron finally embracing his role as the Dark Lord, the season is shaping up to be the series’ most sinister chapter yet. Fans will find out soon whether “Full-Metal Sauron” lives up to the hype.
Are you excited to see Sauron embrace his full Dark Lord persona in Season 3 of The Rings of Power?
