A24’s ‘Elden Ring’ Movie Is Reportedly Shaping Up to Be an Epic-Length Fantasy
Few video games have built a mythology as dense as ‘Elden Ring’. FromSoftware’s open-world hit, developed under Hidetaka Miyazaki with a mythology written by George R.R. Martin, has sold more than 30 million copies, so a big-screen adaptation was always going to be a major undertaking.
A24 and Bandai Namco are bringing that world to theaters with Alex Garland writing and directing. Filming ran for about 4 months, from April to July, and the film is now in post-production with Industrial Light & Magic ahead of its March 3, 2028 release in theaters and IMAX.
New details suggest the adaptation is going big in every way. According to a new Deadline report, the ‘Elden Ring’ script runs at least 180 pages with visuals, raising the possibility that the finished film could run close to 3 hours.
No official runtime has been confirmed, and A24, Amazon and the producers declined to comment. Still, the page count points to an ambitious, sprawling story that matches the scale of the game.
The film is also said to stay faithful to its source material. Kit Connor plays the protagonist, and the story follows his journey through large-scale battles with monsters and dragons, the kind of fights that made the game famous.

The budget is just as ambitious. Deadline reports a figure between $175 million and $200 million, closer to the higher end, and The Wall Street Journal recently put it at nearly $200 million. That makes ‘Elden Ring’ by far A24’s most expensive film. The studio’s previous record was ‘Marty Supreme’ at about $70 million, followed by Garland’s ‘Civil War’ at $50 million.
A24 is reportedly fully financing the project itself. Deadline described it as the biggest-budget standalone project ever offered at a film or TV market. The film is also drawing interest from buyers. Amazon MGM has reportedly picked up a large share of international pay-1 streaming rights, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s theatrical run in several markets.

The specific countries haven’t been named, and the deal’s reported value of tens of millions of dollars is unconfirmed. Amazon’s role is limited to streaming rights rather than funding the production.
‘Elden Ring’ heads to the American Film Market in Los Angeles next week, where A24 is reportedly letting international buyers read the script with a staff member present, while keeping parts of it confidential.
Connor leads an impressive ensemble. The cast includes Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz and Nick Offerman.

John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz also appear. Character names and story details are still under wraps, and no trailer has been released. Connor has a big year ahead in 2028. Besides ‘Elden Ring’, he is set to play Cyclops in the next ‘X-Men’ film, which is also scheduled for that year.
Garland’s involvement has fans optimistic. The filmmaker behind ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Civil War’ is known for thoughtful, visually striking storytelling, which could suit the game’s dark and mysterious world.
The long runtime, huge budget, and focus on faithfulness all suggest A24 is treating the adaptation as a major event. If it succeeds, some insiders expect a sequel to follow, though Deadline has heard nothing about one being in development.
