Jacksepticeye Offers a Promising Peek Behind the ‘Bloodborne’ Movie Curtain
Few games in the FromSoftware catalog inspire the kind of devotion that ‘Bloodborne’ does. Released in 2015, the gothic action RPG was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Sony. More than a decade later, its fans are still waiting for the sequel, remaster, or port they have asked for year after year.
The game has stayed locked to the PlayStation 4 for over a decade, with no PS5 remaster, and it remains one of the most popular emulated titles on PC. A recent report claimed Bluepoint pitched a remake that Sony accepted, only for FromSoftware to turn it down. That has left the community hungry for any sign of life from the franchise.
Then came a surprise from an unexpected direction. At CinemaCon, Sony Pictures announced an R-rated animated feature based on the game, produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and YouTuber Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye. No director, screenwriter, voice cast, or release date was given at the time.
The reaction was far from warm. McLoughlin later admitted on the ‘100 Questions with Tom Simons’ show that 80% of the responses to his involvement were critical. He explained that the pushback largely came from the shock of seeing a YouTuber attached to a beloved game.
Now, the producer has a more encouraging message for worried fans. IGN’s @IGN account shared that McLoughlin gave the outlet an exclusive update on the film, and the news is better than many expected. He told IGN that the project is much further along the pipeline than it was at the April announcement, and that a writer and director are now attached.
The names remain under wraps, but McLoughlin hinted that the creative groundwork is well underway. He said the team has a lot more of the story mapped out and that the people needed to make the film are in place. He also said he hopes to share announcements soon about who is involved, along with small teases of the story.
The chat with IGN came about because of a separate gig. McLoughlin lent his voice and likeness to ‘Hitman: World of Assassination’ as the Elusive Target ‘The Host,’ which is free to play until Nov. 25. IGN used that appearance as a reason to ask him about the Bloodborne film, and the conversation drifted to the ‘Elden Ring’ adaptation, another FromSoftware property headed to the screen.
That comparison is an interesting one. The live-action ‘Elden Ring’ movie is being directed and written by Alex Garland for A24 and Bandai Namco. McLoughlin suggested the two films have little in common, since ‘Bloodborne’ and ‘Elden Ring’ sit so far apart in tone and identity.
What the film will actually be remains a question mark, though some pieces are falling into place. McLoughlin has indicated it will tell a new story within the game’s universe rather than retell the 2015 plot. He has described his own role as making sure the filmmakers truly understand ‘Bloodborne’ instead of treating it as a generic horror brand.
His personal stake has been clear from the start. In his original statement, he called ‘Bloodborne’ his favorite game ever made and said he knows how passionate its fans are. He has also said he would not have allowed the film to go in a direction unworthy of the franchise.
For now, trust will have to be earned the hard way, through names, story details, and eventually footage. Until then, the film remains the clearest confirmed expansion of the property. After years of silence from the game side, even a modest bit of forward momentum feels like a win for Hunters waiting in Yharnam.
