What Viewers Should Know About the Source Behind Apple TV’s ‘Nocturne’
‘Nocturne’ makes its global debut on Apple TV today with its first two episodes. The crime drama centers on a serial killer and the detective trying to stop him, and many viewers want to know where the story came from before they press play.
The short answer is that the series is an adaptation rather than an original idea. The ‘Nocturne’ source material is a pair of bestselling crime novels, and the show carries their story into a new setting. Here is what the available reporting says about the books, the plot, the cast and the release plan.
The Nocturne Source Material Explained
The series is based on the internationally bestselling crime novels ‘Lazarus’ and ‘The Sandman’ by Lars Kepler. Lars Kepler is the pen name of the Swedish writing duo Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril. Apple’s trailer announcement singled out the novel ‘The Sandman’ as the basis for the drama.
‘Lazarus’ and ‘The Sandman’ are the seventh and fourth books in the Killer Instinct series, and the show was previously titled ‘Lazarus’. That means the television version draws on two entries from a longer run of novels rather than a single standalone book.
The scale of the source series helps explain why Apple took an interest. The ten published crime novels, known as the Joona Linna series, have sold a total of 20 million copies globally. The books have been translated into 40 languages and are distributed in over 170 territories.
The authors are also directly involved in the production. Lars Kepler, meaning Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril, serves as an executive producer on the series. That connection suggests the adaptation has the backing of the people who created the original story.
Nocturne Plot and the Move to Pennsylvania
The story follows Jonah Lynn, played by Liev Schreiber, a former soldier turned homicide detective. Tired of working the tough streets of Philadelphia, he moves to a small town in western Pennsylvania in search of a quiet life.
That peace does not last. The town and Jonah’s family come under attack from a diabolically cunning serial killer named Jurek Walter, played by Stephen Graham. Jonah is forced to protect everything he holds dear.
The narrative also follows FBI Agent Saga Bauer, played by Zazie Beetz, whom Jonah regards as a surrogate daughter. The search for Jurek’s last missing victim draws her into a dangerous confrontation with the killer.
The adaptation also changes where the story takes place. The series brings the dark Scandinavian crime fiction of the novels to an American setting. Apple’s own teaser describes the hook in simple terms. A victim of a notorious killer unexpectedly turns up alive, a detective races to find the one person still missing, and his protégé goes undercover to get answers from the killer himself.
Nocturne Cast and Creative Team
Schreiber and Beetz star in the series and also serve as executive producers. The supporting cast includes Stephen Graham, Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr. Graham is best known to many viewers for ‘Adolescence’, and here he plays the killer.
Two writers share the main creative duties. John Hlavin, whose credits include ‘Shooter’ and ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’, is the showrunner, writer and executive producer. Rowan Joffé, a BAFTA Award winner, created the series for television and also writes and executive produces.
Tim Van Patten directs the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer. His credits include ‘Franklin’, ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Black Mirror’. The mix of experienced television voices points to a drama built for a serious, slow burning tone.
The series is produced for Apple TV by A+E Studios in association with Range Studios. Julie Herrin serves as co-executive producer, alongside several other executive producers drawn from the cast and the author team.
Nocturne Premiere Date and Where to Watch
The ten episode drama debuts on Friday, October 30, with new episodes arriving every Friday through December 25 on Apple TV. That weekly schedule gives viewers roughly two months to follow the hunt for Jurek Walter as it unfolds.
Apple celebrated the series with a red carpet premiere on October 20 at the Regal Union Square in New York City. Nearly the whole principal cast attended, along with Hlavin.
The release also lands in a busy stretch for Apple’s thrillers. Two weeks before ‘Nocturne’, the heist drama ’12 12 12′ premiered with Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. Apple plans to open 2027 with ‘The Wanted Man’, starring Hugh Laurie as an organized crime boss.
Readers who know the Lars Kepler novels may wonder whether moving Jurek Walter’s story from Scandinavia to western Pennsylvania keeps its menace intact, and we would like to hear in the comments how Stephen Graham’s Jurek compares with the killer you pictured on the page.
