Few TV shows are as closely tied to New York City as ‘Law & Order: SVU’, and few athletes are as beloved there right now as Jalen Brunson. The Knicks star helped bring the franchise its first NBA Championship in 53 years this June, cementing his status as one of the city’s biggest celebrities.

Brunson has also built a friendship with ‘SVU’ star Mariska Hargitay over the years, with the actress regularly cheering on the Knicks courtside. The 2 even opened this year’s Emmy Awards, which Hargitay hosted, with a pre-taped segment together.

Now that friendship is paying off on screen. Brunson will appear as a detective in the next episode of ‘Law & Order: SVU’, making his acting debut on one of television’s longest-running dramas.

A first look from the episode shows a police lineup, with suspects holding numbered cards against a height chart, the kind of classic interrogation-room setup ‘SVU’ fans know well. Brunson’s detective role puts him right in the middle of the action alongside Hargitay’s Olivia Benson.

The episode is the 5th of season 28 and airs November 5, conveniently on a night when the Knicks aren’t playing. Brunson was spotted filming with Hargitay in New York City back in September.

The appearance has been a long time coming. After the Knicks’ championship run, Brunson said in an Instagram Reel that he would try to get on ‘SVU’ when asked about his off-season plans, and in July he said he would love to make a cameo.

Hargitay quickly embraced the idea. Speaking to Variety in August, she said the cameo was definitely happening, though she admitted there was no script for him yet at the time. NBC officially confirmed the guest role on September 17. Fans have been calling it a perfect example of manifestation, as Brunson turned an offhand wish into an actual role.

The ‘SVU’ appearance is part of a big entertainment year for the Knicks point guard. Beyond the Emmys segment, he also hosted the 52nd season premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live’ on September 26.

During his Emmys bit with Hargitay, the pair even referenced OG Anunoby’s memorable tip-in from the 2026 NBA Finals. It’s clear Brunson has embraced the spotlight that came with the Knicks’ title run. His growing list of TV appearances shows how far his fame has reached beyond basketball.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ kicked off its 28th season on October 8. Hargitay and Ice T lead the cast, joined by Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane, Aimé Donna Kelly and Corey Cott. Michele Fazekas serves as showrunner, having returned at the start of the previous season. Dick Wolf, Hargitay and others executive produce the series for Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment.

Athletes making cameos on TV dramas isn’t new, but Brunson’s role has generated unusual excitement in New York. Seeing a hometown champion working alongside Benson is the kind of crossover fans of both the Knicks and ‘SVU’ will love.

Whether this turns into a one-time appearance or a recurring part remains to be seen. For now, Knicks fans and ‘SVU’ loyalists alike will be watching on November 5 to see how the point guard handles police work.
