For an entire generation of ‘Star Trek’ fans, the bridge of the Enterprise-D felt like a second home. At the center of it stood Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and beside him, for the first 4 seasons of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, was a young Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher.

That shared history makes this week especially painful for Wheaton. Stewart died at 86 at his Los Angeles home on October 28, after what his family described as a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, in the loving care of his wife, Sunny Ozell.

Wheaton has now shared his own tribute to his late co-star. Rather than a long statement, he posted 2 photos alongside a short message with a broken-heart emoji, wishing his captain godspeed.

Before His Death, Patrick Stewart Spoke Openly About His Strained Relationship With His Children

The first image is a candid snapshot of the 2 actors with their arms around each other, smiling for the camera. The second is a still from ‘The Next Generation’ showing Picard in his red Starfleet uniform, resting a reassuring hand on young Wesley’s shoulder.

Together, the images say more than words could. They capture both the on-screen mentorship between the captain and the young ensign and the real-life friendship that grew from it.

Wheaton’s affection for Stewart was clearly returned. When Wheaton made a surprise cameo as Wesley Crusher in the season 2 finale of ‘Star Trek: Picard’, Stewart spoke warmly about him, telling Entertainment Weekly he had great respect for Wheaton’s work on ‘The Next Generation’.

Stewart described Wheaton as mature and thoughtful rather than simply a kid on set, and said he hoped to see him act more. He added that Wheaton brought something significant to the screen.

Wheaton also stayed close to the ‘Picard’ era behind the scenes. He hosted ‘The Ready Room’, the official aftershow for ‘Star Trek: Picard’, giving him another way to celebrate the return of his old captain.

Wheaton has often described his former co-stars as family. He has said that when he wants to share important milestones, he texts his ‘Star Trek’ castmates, and Stewart was among those he reached out to before launching his podcast, ‘Storytime With Wil Wheaton’.

That sense of family is evident in the many tributes now coming in from the franchise. Jonathan Frakes, Stewart’s ‘Next Generation’ co-star, wished his friend rest, while George Takei credited Stewart with inspiring a new generation of fans. William Shatner also paid tribute, writing that Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him.

Beyond ‘Star Trek’, Stewart leaves an extraordinary legacy. He was a core member of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1966 to 1982, was knighted in 2010, and played Professor Charles Xavier in the ‘X-Men’ films.

Fans will see him one last time as Xavier in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which opens in theaters on December 18. His final performance arrives as the industry continues to honor his life and work.

For many fans, Wheaton’s tribute captures something special about ‘The Next Generation’. The relationship between Picard and Wesley was built on guidance and trust, and Wheaton’s photos suggest that bond carried over into real life. His simple goodbye shows how much Stewart meant to the people who served alongside him on the Enterprise. For Wheaton, Stewart will always be his captain.
