What ‘VisionQuest’ Has Shown About Friday and Ultron So Far

Friday’s fate in ‘VisionQuest’ has become the biggest open question of the season. The seventh episode, titled “Immolation,” ended on a cliffhanger that left the fates of Friday and Paladin uncertain. Ultron appeared to take out both characters in quick succession during the final moments.

The short answer is that the series has not yet made it official. The show has not confirmed whether either character actually died, and the season finale is set for November 10. Here is what the episodes have actually established, and why the question is more open than it first looks.

Did Ultron Kill Friday in ‘VisionQuest’

On screen, the answer looks like yes. One episode breakdown describes Ultron killing Friday while Ultron, the mysterious client, kills Paladin. That same recap notes that the client finally reveals themselves and that Vision accepts the truth.

The moment lands hard because of how the season treated Friday beforehand. She calls the house and reveals that Jocasta is more human than synth, with gaps in her memory, and Ultron had known she was there the whole time. That detail suggests the confrontation was less a surprise attack than a move Ultron had been preparing.

Viewers on social media took the scene at face value. Fans flooded social media with emotional reactions after the episode aired, and one viewer said they were furious that Friday had died. Another viewer on X pointed to the moment as the point where Ultron gave himself away.

Is Friday Dead or Only Removed From Jocasta’s Mind

The case for caution starts with where Friday was when it happened. Episodes five and six show Friday infiltrating Jocasta’s mind, which put her fate in question well before the seventh episode. That setup means the final scene may describe an expulsion rather than a deletion.

Some viewers have made exactly that argument. One fan theorized that Ultron may have only expelled Friday from Jocasta’s mind rather than destroying her, and argued the show would not rush her death given how much attention Jarvis’s earlier death received. It is a reasonable reading of how the series has paced its losses so far.

The earlier episodes also left room for survival. Reporting on the fifth and sixth episodes noted that Friday’s departure does not necessarily mean she was destroyed. Until the finale answers it directly, both readings remain consistent with what has aired.

How Ultron Survived to Reach This Point

Ultron’s presence in the series rests on a retcon. Inverse explains that Vision did not destroy Ultron at the end of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and instead saved him. Wikipedia’s summary of the series says Vision uploaded Ultron into the Mindspace after his android body was destroyed.

The showrunner has addressed that choice directly. Terry Matalas told Empire that Vision effectively backed Ultron up in the film because he never really wanted to kill him. That framing makes the villain’s survival an extension of Vision’s character rather than a loophole.

Ultron’s escape came through Vision’s own decision. In the fifth and sixth episodes, Vision lowers the firewall even after Jocasta’s warning, which lets Ultron escape into the internet. The AI companions had cautioned against it. Edith, Friday and Jarvis all warn Vision that keeping Ultron around cannot lead to anything good.

What Friday’s Story Means for the Vision Trilogy

Friday was framed as an emotional anchor from the start. Matalas said Friday was there when Tony Stark died and asked what that is like for an AI that could not protect the person it was programmed to protect. That approach fits his interest in philosophical questions such as an AI experiencing grief and trauma.

The casting reinforced the idea that she mattered. Orla Brady took over the role from Kerry Condon, who voiced Friday until ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ with the human form presented as Friday’s preferred appearance at Vision’s request. Brady and Matalas know each other from ‘Star Trek: Picard,’ and her casting was made public in August 2025.

The trilogy context raises the stakes for the finale. Den of Geek describes the series as the conclusion of Marvel’s unlikely television trilogy. A character who lost Tony and then Jarvis would carry real weight if her story ended here, and just as much if she returned, so which outcome would feel truer to Friday’s arc in ‘VisionQuest’?
