Is This the First Look at an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Incursion? A New Image Has Fans Talking

The multiverse is about to come crashing down in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Joe and Anthony Russo’s film brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and much of the marketing has hinted that entire worlds are on a collision course.

At the heart of that story is a concept called an incursion. In ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, Reed Richards explained that an incursion happens when the boundary between 2 universes erodes, and they collide, destroying one or both.

Fans now believe they may have a fresh look at what that destruction could look like on screen. A new image shared online by the fan account The MCU Scooper has been described as the first official look at the incursion in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

The image shows a large window looking out over a city at sunset, with a massive planet hanging low in the sky. The post placed it next to a comic panel of a figure looking up at a huge planet looming overhead, highlighting the similarity.

Several outlets noted that the image couldn’t be traced to a specific Marvel Studios release, so it should be treated as unverified for now. The outlets also disputed the “first look” claim, since Marvel’s marketing has already shown incursions in other ways.

Earlier promotional material has already put colliding worlds front and center. An international poster released in October shows 2 Earths colliding behind a lineup of heroes, while a masked Doom looms overhead and Sentinels prepare to fire.

That poster features Shuri, Gambit, Loki, Steve Rogers wielding Mjölnir, Bucky Barnes, Charles Xavier, Thor, Yelena Belova, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Reed Richards and Cyclops. Another piece of promo art from October showed 2 planets colliding in pink and violet energy, without any heroes or logos.

A separate image showed the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men logos crashing together. Fans have speculated that this represents 3 different Earths converging, though Marvel hasn’t confirmed which worlds are involved. The idea has deep roots in Marvel Comics. Writer Jonathan Hickman introduced incursions during his ‘Avengers’ run, which led into the 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ event.

In those stories, 2 parallel universes are pulled toward each other with only hours left before impact. Unless one is destroyed to save the other, both are wiped out, a dilemma that forces heroes into impossible choices.

The new image’s pairing with a Hickman-style panel suggests fans expect the film to borrow heavily from that storyline. How closely ‘Doomsday’ follows the comics is still unknown.

The word has also popped up in Marvel’s lighter marketing. Dunkin’s new campaign features Channing Tatum’s Gambit and H.E.R.B.I.E. in a commercial titled “MUNCHKIN Incursion,” set in a diner. That ad is a playful nod to the concept rather than a plot clue. Still, its title shows how central the idea has become to the film’s promotion.

The directors have reportedly described the multiverse collapse as one of the biggest events in the franchise. Joe Russo has been quoted calling it the most profound thing to happen in the MCU, while Anthony Russo reportedly described it as the principle uniting the X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four worlds.

Until Marvel shares more, the latest image remains a tantalizing but unconfirmed glimpse of the chaos to come. Fans will find out exactly how the worlds collide when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18.
