Andrew Garfield Denies Ever Meeting Sam Altman on the Set of ‘Artificial’
Andrew Garfield’s latest role has put him at the center of one of the most talked-about films of the season. In Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’, Garfield plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a story about Altman’s 2023 firing and rehiring at the company.
The film, written by Simon Rich, made its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5. Neon picked up the movie after Amazon dropped it and will release it in theaters on Christmas Day.
The film’s production created an unusual moment for the real-life Altman. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Altman said he ran into the shoot near his house while walking to get coffee and saw cameras and a man dressed exactly like him.
According to Variety, Altman said the 2 of them waved and moved on, and he described the encounter as really weird. The story quickly circulated online as the film’s release drew closer.
Andrew Garfield says Sam Altman described seeing him outside his house during filming, but Garfield insists they have never met or even waved at each other Interviewer: "To go back to Sam Altman in Vanity Fair. He told a really remarkable story about walking out of his home and running into the production of Artificial and seeing you" Andrew: "I wasn’t there" Interviewer: "Did you have a body double?" Andrew: "No. And I replayed it a few times to try and discern what he was actually saying ’cause when I first heard it, I thought he said that we waved at each other" "And then I was like, I need to make sure that I’m clear about what he said so that I’m not misrepresenting it because I was very confused by that" "I didn’t have any interaction with him. I’ve never seen him in real life. We were shooting outside of his house. I was looking for him all that day. I was looking in every window in every street corner. It was an eerie day for sure, ’cause I was like, ‘Oh, any moment’" "And we were told that he wasn’t home and his security people were there, but I think I saw one security guard, but no, I never saw Sam, so he maybe mistook me for someone else" "I have no idea, but I’ve never waved at Sam. I’ve never seen him. Yeah, I was curious about that"

Garfield doesn’t remember it that way. “No, I saw that interview, and I replayed it a few times to try and discern what he was actually saying, because I was very confused by that. I never had any interaction with him,” Garfield told GQ.
One key part of Andrew Garfield’s performance as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman? Nailing the physicality: “A lot of people said he would never sit conventionally. He was always sitting like a little boy.” Watch as Garfield shares more about his research for the role (and where this technology is taking us): https://t.co/LVlFLBZKwZ

He explained that the production was shooting outside Altman’s house on what he called an eerie day, and that the crew had been told Altman wasn’t home. Garfield said he noticed one security guard but never saw Altman, adding that he had no body double and suggesting Altman may have mistaken someone else for him.
The disagreement didn’t end there. According to Variety, an OpenAI representative told GQ that Altman was home during filming and reiterated that he waved at Garfield. That leaves the 2 accounts in direct conflict, with Garfield saying he never saw Altman at all. Garfield said he was simply curious about the story after hearing it.
Andrew Garfield reveals how he feels being linked to Sam Altman forever "I think you might forever be linked with Sam Altman in the imagination of the culture…That’s scary. I’m scared of the idea that… it’s not scary in terms of the link. It’s fine by me." "Maybe I’m getting into some survival stuff for myself but I don’t want to make really powerful enemies. I don’t want to do that, but I’m not saying that that’s certainly what’s going to happen" "I don’t know if he’s going to feel warm towards me, and that’s okay. But there’s still a part of me that wants everyone to be okay all the time"

‘Artificial’ is described as a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence. It focuses on the events of 2023, when Altman was fired and then rehired as OpenAI’s CEO within days.
The film marks a notable project for Guadagnino, who directs a large ensemble telling a story inspired by real people in the tech industry. Its NYFF premiere brought early attention ahead of its theatrical release.

Garfield leads the cast as Altman, with Yura Borisov playing OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz portrays Elon Musk, and Mark Rylance takes on the role of Geoffrey Hinton.
The ensemble also includes Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd, according to The A.V. Club. The cast brings together film veterans and rising names to depict a dramatic chapter in recent tech history.
The conflicting stories add an unexpected layer to the film’s rollout. A movie about a real-life boardroom drama now has its own off-screen debate between its star and the man he portrays.

With ‘Artificial’ set to open on Christmas Day, audiences will soon be able to see Garfield’s take on Altman for themselves, even if the 2 men disagree about whether they ever crossed paths.
Who do you believe about the alleged encounter on the set of Artificial?
