‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Pairs Black Panther With the Thing, and Their New Description Teases a Threat Bigger Than Thanos

Marvel has spent months teasing the unlikely partnerships at the center of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and the Black Panther and The Thing team-up is shaping up to be one of the most charming. The pairing brings together 2 teams that fans have long wanted to see on the big screen: the Fantastic Four and the forces of Wakanda.

The first hint came back in January. Marvel’s fourth teaser trailer starred Letitia Wright as Shuri, the Wakandan princess who took on the Black Panther mantle after the death of her brother, T’Challa, and closed with a meeting nobody saw coming. When M’Baku introduced himself as King of Wakanda, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm answered, “Ben, uh, Yancy Street, between Broome and Grand.”

Now fans have a much clearer picture of how Shuri and Ben will fit together. A newly surfaced description shared by MCU Film News explains that “neither Shuri nor Ben Grimm ever expected to become their planet’s defenders,” and that as the new Black Panther, Shuri “draws on her extraordinary fighting skills, her unparalleled intellect, and her unique ability to unite those around her to stand head-on against the rising threat.”

The description frames Ben in a slightly different light than fans might expect. It calls him “a skilled pilot, using his talents to explore the stars,” and says both heroes are “thrust into a spotlight they never asked for, yet accept their new responsibilities as protectors of their homes.”

The final line is the one sure to get fans talking. According to the text, the pair “must stand together to confront a force far greater than even Thanos or Galactus,” which raises the stakes for Robert Downey Jr.’s villain in a big way.

That reluctant-hero angle fits what the teasers have shown about Shuri. “I’ve lost everyone that matters to me,” Shuri says in a serious voiceover in the teaser, before adding, “The king has his duties to prepare our people for the afterlife. I have mine.”

In the same footage, she laments the deaths of Queen Ramonda and T’Challa and confirms that M’Baku has become King. The teaser also brought back Namor, as the Talokanil were shown led by Tenoch Huerta Mejia’s Namor, now wearing a new outfit since Shuri’s last encounter with him in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

There’s also no confusion about who wears the suit this time. Shuri will still be Black Panther in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, as teasers and trailers have confirmed, giving the character the stability many fans have wanted since she took on the mantle.

Seeing Wakanda and the Fantastic Four together is more than just a fun novelty. The team-up pays homage to the comics’ history between the Fantastic Four and Black Panther, and it reflects a return to the bigger crossover approach that defined the MCU’s biggest events.

The pairing has kept showing up in the marketing, too. A recent promotional poster featured 7 heroes from the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four, including Shuri and Ben Grimm, alongside Reed Richards, Gambit, Sam Wilson, Yelena Belova and Thor.

Shuri and Ben are just one part of an enormous ensemble. In the film, the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers and the X-Men team up to face Doctor Doom, played by Downey. The Thing’s Fantastic Four teammates, played by Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal, will all reprise their roles as well.

Directed by the Russo Brothers, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18. If this description is any sign, the friendship between a Wakandan genius and a rocky pilot from Yancy Street could be one of the film’s emotional anchors.
