Every piece of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ marketing gets picked apart, and fans are now finding clues in car commercials. Jeep’s latest tie-in has already revealed a destroyed X-Mansion and a look at Latveria, and fans think it may also hint at how the heroes reach Doctor Doom.

Jeep and Marvel Studios launched “A Jeep 4×4 for Any Universe” on November 6, the third and final chapter of a year-long campaign tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives in theaters December 18.

One character has been notably absent from most of the marketing: Doctor Strange. When Marvel Studios revealed the ensemble, one of the most obvious omissions was Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, the sorcerer who has become central to the MCU’s multiverse storyline. Since then, fans have been looking for any sign of the former Sorcerer Supreme.

Now they think they’ve found one. As the fan account Earth 616 pointed out, the Jeeps at the end of the new commercial drive out of glowing orange portals that look just like Doctor Strange’s Sling Ring portals, and Doom’s tower stands right behind them. The account suggests Strange-style magic may be how everyone gets to Doom’s doorstep.

The setting matters. The campaign sends Jeep vehicles through Avengers Tower, the X-Mansion, the Fantastic Four’s universe, and Doctor Doom’s Latveria, so the portals appear to connect those worlds to Doom’s home. Earlier, a Jeep commercial showed Doctor Doom’s Doomstadt castle towering over the city in the mountains.

Fans aren’t the only ones considering the idea. The Direct noted that the mystical arts-style portals in the Jeep promo could hint at how the Avengers and Fantastic Four will eventually reach Latveria in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It also raises the possibility that Doomstadt could become an important gathering place, or even the setting for the film’s final battle.

Strange’s involvement has been unclear for a long time. In a feature with Variety, Cumberbatch revealed that he wouldn’t appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, saying plans changed after Jonathan Majors’ Kang exit, though he’d have a bigger role in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. He later reversed course, re-confirming his involvement in a separate interview and admitting he got it wrong.

It’s still unclear exactly what role he’ll play. Marvel has confirmed Cumberbatch’s involvement without revealing his character, and the actor acknowledged his return in January 2025 after previously suggesting Doctor Strange would sit out the film. Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed the specifics, which leaves plenty of room for speculation.

A stranger rumor also connects to the ad. According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello on X, Cumberbatch reportedly plays Boris, Doctor Doom’s sidekick, who wields a sling ring and appears as a wizard beside Robert Downey Jr.’s character. If that’s true, the sling ring-style portals outside Doom’s tower could belong to a villain rather than the hero fans know.

Not everyone buys that theory. Some have suggested Cumberbatch and possibly Charlize Theron’s Clea will have small cameo roles in ‘Doomsday’, noting that because Strange is so important in the ‘Secret Wars’ comics, he’s almost certain to play a major part in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Either way, sling ring magic seems likely to appear somewhere in the film.

The rest of the ad is packed too. Earth 616 notes it features Doctor Doom, Captain America, Thor, Nightcrawler, Johnny Storm, Cyclops, The Thing, Sentinels and H.E.R.B.I.E., and one of its signature moments has The Thing driving a Jeep Wrangler. All of them seem to end up at Doom’s tower. Fans will find out if the portals mean anything soon. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in US theaters on Dec 18, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

Who do you think is opening the magical portals in Jeep's Avengers: Doomsday ad?
