‘Elsbeth’ Season 4 Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: How a Golf Ball and Tree Sap Unravel ‘A Bad Lie’

This ‘Elsbeth’ recap and ending explained breakdown looks at the latest hour, titled ‘A Bad Lie’, which aired on CBS on Thursday, November 5 at 9pm ET/PT and was directed by Joe Menendez. Nat Faxon and Erika Woods guest star, and the script comes from Leah Nanako Winkler.

The episode pairs a staged country club homicide with a family story about Teddy’s wedding. The series builds on the inverted mystery popularized by ‘Columbo’, leaning on character eccentricities rather than grim procedural tropes. Here is how the case unfolds and what the ending reveals about both the killer and Elsbeth’s own family.

The Recap of a Country Club Murder

The hour opens at the Nickerson Country Club during its charity golf tournament, where unpopular dentist Perry Macintyre wants a $250,000 private jet trip to Aspen. Faxon plays Perry as a man desperate for social validation.

When a beverage cart attendant distracts onlookers, Perry falsely claims a miracle shot after a ball is recovered from the cup. The lie is small at first, but it sets the whole story in motion.

Club president Trip Langenhagen doubts the sudden athletic feat, catches Perry searching the brush and finds a duplicate ball. Trip gives him a chance to come clean, and Perry lies to him again. Trip then threatens expulsion and notes that Perry was only admitted because he offered discounted braces to members’ children.

Overwhelmed by panic and humiliation, Perry strikes Trip in the head with a heavy rock. He uses an approaching storm as cover, drags the president near a well under an Osage orange tree and pulls a massive branch down over the body. The goal is to pass the death off as a weather related accident.

Elsbeth Ending Explained Through a Golf Ball and Tree Sap

Elsbeth crosses paths with claims investigator Rory Torkelson, played by Kurt Fuller, who is auditing the tournament’s lavish payout. He specializes in hole in one insurance. Rory is quickly impressed by her instincts as they examine the suspicious timeline together.

Elsbeth finds Perry’s eagerness to install a commemorative plaque tasteless so soon after the president’s death. Reconstructing the errant drive, she and Rory discover Perry’s real golf ball in an adjacent estate pond. The missing ball becomes the thread that undoes the whole story.

Osage orange sap on the recovered ball and on Perry’s gear ties him directly to the staged scene. The physical clue neatly echoes the tree branch he used to disguise the killing.

Elsbeth gathers the suspects and family in the club entryway and stages a reenactment. Confronted with the blood marked stone and the pond ball, Perry confesses and is arrested. Because the audience already knows who did it, the satisfaction comes from watching the evidence fall into place.

Lydia and the Strattons Meet Elsbeth

The case runs alongside a personal story. Accompanied by her critical mother Lydia, played by Christine Ebersole, Elsbeth meets Glenn and Yvette Stratton to discuss wedding plans for her son Teddy and his fiancé Roy. Damian Young and Woods play the Strattons.

There is a nice piece of casting trivia here as well. Woods is the real life partner of Wendell Pierce, who plays Captain Wagner on the show.

Lydia repeatedly warns Elsbeth to suppress her flamboyant quirks, fearing she will embarrass the family in front of the Strattons. It is a familiar tension, with a daughter managing her mother’s expectations in public.

The payoff arrives once the murder is solved. The Strattons welcome Elsbeth’s originality, which surprises Lydia. Showrunner Jonathan Tolins had hinted that this would be the episode where Lydia starts to see that Elsbeth’s work impresses people.

Wagner and the Commissioner at the Precinct

Back at the precinct, Captain C.W. Wagner oversees Community Outreach Day while confronting hostility from Police Commissioner Tully. The subplot gives Pierce a different register from the lighter golf course mystery.

Wagner shields his officers from unfair scrutiny. The commissioner’s insistence on obedience leaves Wagner questioning the institution he serves.

The next two episodes send Elsbeth into competitive eating and a celebrity Pilates murder case. For now, Lydia’s softened view of her daughter is the story thread that lingers most, so tell us in the comments whether you think her newfound respect for Elsbeth will hold up by the time Teddy and Roy reach the altar.
