Angel Studios has built its reputation on films that find their audience through word of mouth, and ‘Drummer Boy’ is shaping up as the studio’s latest crowd-pleaser at the box office. The Revolutionary War musical drama follows a young drummer, an enslaved woman, and a divided family searching for freedom during America’s fight for independence. Angel calls it its first live-action theatrical musical.

There’s real music pedigree behind the camera, too. Filmmaker Ben Smallbone co-directed the film with his brother Joel David Smallbone, who is one half of the Christian pop duo for KING + COUNTRY, from a screenplay by Richard L. Ramsey. Joel also leads the cast as Jeremiah Clem, alongside Lucas Leach as his brother Benjamin, India Brown as Emmaline, Ioan Gruffudd as Nathaniel Clem, Iain Glen as Major John Ambrose and Charles Esten as Lord Balfour.

The opening-day numbers have now arrived, and they’re impressive for the studio. ‘Drummer Boy’ grossed an estimated $3.5 million on Friday, previews included, from 2,850 theaters, according to box office analyst Luiz Fernando. He projects a 3-day weekend of $8 million to $11 million, which would give the film the 3rd biggest debut among Angel’s live-action releases.

Fernando’s comparisons show how far the new release has already climbed. Its Friday total beats the opening days of ‘Brave the Dark’ ($930,000), ‘Sight’ ($1.1 million), ‘The Shift’ ($1.8 million), ‘The Last Rodeo’ ($2.1 million), ‘Runner’ ($2.5 million), ‘Bonhoeffer’ ($2.6 million), ‘Homestead’ ($2.9 million) and ‘Cabrini’ ($3.1 million). It sits just behind ‘Sound of Hope’ at $3.6 million.

The studio’s biggest openers are still out of reach for now. ‘Young Washington’ opened with $7.6 million on its first day, ‘The King of Kings’ with $7 million, and ‘David’ with $9.7 million. ‘Sound of Freedom’ remains the benchmark at $14.2 million.

Trackers don’t all agree on the final figure. Deadline has ‘Drummer Boy’ at No. 3 with an $8.8 million opening, while The Hollywood Reporter projects a weekend of around $7.9 million. Variety reported a slightly lower Friday of $3.39 million and expects $7.9 million by Sunday.

Either way, the film beat pre-release expectations. It was originally tracking for a mid-single-digit opening, with around $3 million in presales. The Numbers had forecast just $4.9 million and a 6th-place finish.

Deadline also noted that the opening is close to the $7.7 million start for ‘Unsung Hero’, the 2024 faith-based film Joel David Smallbone previously directed. The South has been the film’s strongest region, bringing in 28% of the gross compared with a norm of 17% for other titles in the market.

The reception shows a familiar split. Critics are mixed, with the film sitting at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave it an A CinemaScore and a 93% audience score. That A matches Angel’s own ‘Young Washington’, and Fernando noted it’s the studio’s 10th release to earn that grade.

The numbers also look good for the studio’s bottom line. ‘Drummer Boy’ reportedly cost $10 million to make, so a weekend in the high single digits puts it close to breaking even right away.

The film opened against tough competition. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ dominated with $14.5 million on Friday, and ‘The Cat in the Hat’ followed with $6 million. Box Office Pro’s early estimates had ‘Drummer Boy’ in a tight race for 3rd place with A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’ and ‘Ramayana’. With strong word of mouth and a Christmas season ahead, Angel will be hoping the film’s audience scores turn into the long run that has defined many of the studio’s biggest hits.

Do you think Drummer Boy can become one of Angel Studios' biggest box office hits?
