Alec Baldwin, 68, Considers Retirement and Says He No Longer Wants To Work
Alec Baldwin recently shared that the shadow of the 2021 Rust set tragedy has left him with a deep desire to walk away from his acting career for good. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on Monday, April 13, the 68-year-old actor admitted that he has largely retreated from the industry to spend time with his seven young children.
The accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the subsequent years of litigation have fundamentally altered his perspective on his professional life. “I don’t want to leave my house anymore,” Baldwin stated during the interview, expressing a total loss of interest in his former vocation.
He reflected on the three and a half years he spent mostly at home following the incident, noting that he now strongly prefers the quiet of family life to the pressure of film sets. “I want to retire and stay home with my kids,” he added, emphasizing that his primary focus has shifted entirely to his role as a father and husband.
The legal fallout from the shooting was particularly grueling for Baldwin, who faced involuntary manslaughter charges that were eventually dismissed in mid-2024. He described the period as “unspeakably difficult” and painful, maintaining that the emotional and physical toll was nearly overwhelming.
Even after the initial charges were dropped, he was contractually obligated to return to Montana to complete the production of Rust as part of a legal settlement with Hutchins’ widow. Wrapping up the Western proved to be an ordeal of its own, as Baldwin revealed he suffered from orthostatic hypotension, a condition that caused significant blood pressure drops.
He described being so ill during the final shoot that he was bedridden for over a week and required extensive physical therapy just to remain upright. “I had to get up on a horse and go back there to Montana to finish the film, or they were going to sue the s–t out of me,” he recalled, admitting that his poor health hindered the quality of his performance.
While Rust was eventually finished and released in 2025, Baldwin remains entangled in the legal system through his own active lawsuits. In early 2025, he initiated a civil suit alleging malicious prosecution and civil rights violations against the New Mexico investigators and prosecutors involved in his case.
He claims that officials targeted him for political gain and deliberately mishandled evidence throughout the investigation, seeking both damages and a public correction of the record. Despite his retirement talk, Baldwin has remained visible on screen through his family’s TLC reality series, The Baldwins, which recently concluded its first eight-episode season in early 2025.
He also recently filmed a role in the crime thriller Kockroach alongside Taron Egerton and Chris Hemsworth, a project currently slated for a 2027 release. He even made a comedic turn portraying Donald Trump in the Spanish film Torrente for President, proving that while he may yearn for the quiet of home, his presence in the industry hasn’t quite faded yet.
