All 3 Twin Peaks Seasons in Order: Including the Prequel Movie

twin peaks featured

Twin Peaks is one of the best psychological thriller series ever created, written, and directed by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The show follows an FBI agent who investigates a murder, and after the series’ initial run, a prequel and a sequel came out.

Seeing how popular the show was – and the fact that a sequel came around 27 years after the initial Twin Peaks premiered – fans got a bit lost when talking about how many seasons of Twin Peaks there are. Don’t worry, though; I’ve got you covered. Let’s explore all the Twin Peaks seasons, the prequel movie, and those epic collections of deleted scenes.

How many Twin Peaks seasons are there?

There are three seasons of Twin Peaks out there, along with a prequel movie to the show’s first two seasons. The first two seasons came out in 1990-91, after which came the prequel movie in 1992. The third and final season came out over 25 years later – in 2017.

Twin Peaks seasons in order (at a glance)

As I’ve mentioned, there are three seasons of Twin Peaks altogether, along with one movie and an ‘untold story’ movie that’s actually a collection of the 1992 movie’s deleted scenes. They go as follows:

  1. Twin Peaks Season 1 (1990)
  2. Twin Peaks Season 2 (1991)
  3. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)
  4. Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces (2014)
  5. Twin Peaks (2017)

The last season of Twin Peaks is a sequel to the initial two seasons but can be regarded as a separate show, considering the fact that it happens around 25 years after the events of Twin Peaks Seasons 1 and 2.

Are Twin Peaks seasons connected? Do you need to watch them in a specific order?

All Twin Peaks seasons (and the prequel movie) are connected with characters and the subject matter. To understand the plot, you need to watch Twin Peaks in a specific order. It can either be by release date or chronologically.

What is the best way to watch Twin Peaks shows & movie(s)?

As I’ve mentioned, Twin Peaks shows and movies are connected, so you need to watch them in a specific order. You can choose to watch by release date or chronologically as the story unfolds within the fictional timeline. However, I recommend watching Twin Peaks by release date, as that was the way the creators intended the story to be told.

1. Twin Peaks Season 1 (1990)

The first season of Twin Peaks came out in 1990 and started the entire story that’d quickly unravel into a huge web of mystery where nothing is as it seems. In the beginning, an FBI agent named Dale Cooper is called in to investigate a crime in a small Washington state town called Twin Peaks.

A young woman named Laura Palmer was found dead, washed ashore on a beach near the town. As Dale starts investigating the town, he realizes that Twin Peaks is a much darker and much more mysterious place than he initially thought. It’ll lead him to the woodland area around the town, but within Twin Peaks, everyone knows everyone, and many things are kept secret.

By the end of the season, Dale Cooper doesn’t find the perpetrator.

2. Twin Peaks Season 2 (1991)

The story picks up where Season 1 left off. Dale Cooper is in his hotel room, hurt, while Leo Johnson is left brain-damaged after surviving a shooting. Some characters disappear while new characters are introduced, and the mystery is somewhat resolved.

I say somewhat resolved because it actually ends on a cliffhanger, with a head smashed into a bathroom mirror. I wish not to spoil all the twists for those planning to watch Twin Peaks just now, but there’s a reason why these first 30 episodes of Twin Peaks throughout the first two seasons are so highly respected and rated at 8.8/10 on IMDb.

3. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is a 134-minute movie serving as a prequel to the two Twin Peaks seasons we’ve already mentioned. It’s a chronicle of the last few days in the life of Laura Palmer, the victim found at the beginning of Twin Peaks Season 1 – and the reason why Dale Cooper was summoned to investigate Twin Peaks in the first place.

The plot happens a year after the murder of another woman, Teresa Banks, who lives in a town adjacent to Twin Peaks. As the investigators try to find the perpetrators, they uncover a mysterious clue – and even more mysteriously, one of them disappears shortly after.

Fast forward to Laura Palmer, we see what a troubled life she lived – especially those last few days – that included drug addiction, two boyfriends, a potentially schizophrenic father, and more. How does that all connect to Teresa Banks, Laura Palmer’s death, and the Twin Peaks show? Watch the film, and find out.

4. Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces (2014)

This 91-minute movie is actually comprised of deleted scenes from the 1992 prequel movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. All the scenes put together to tell a story that hasn’t been told before. The story revolves around the prequel but gives some clues – or missing pieces, if you will – to the initial Twin Peaks storyline as well. It’s certainly worth a watch.

5. Twin Peaks (2017)

Last but not least, Twin Peaks Season 3 is somewhat regarded as a separate show because it happens 25 years after the events of Twin Peaks Seasons 1 and 2. The 18-episode storyline revolves around the same small town and even the same FBI agent, Dale Cooper, portrayed by the same actor, Kyle MacLachlan.

Some other characters returned as well, and David Lynch himself also played a role in the series. Fans of the original Twin Peaks actually had high praise for the new series/season of the show, which is why it dons an amazing 8.5/10 IMDb rating.
