Amy Pascal Shares an Update on Live-Action Miles Morales Movie – “Not Until We Make Two More Movies”
One of the standout animated superhero franchises in recent memory is undoubtedly the ‘Spider-Verse’ series. The inaugural film, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ enjoyed monumental success, while its sequel, ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ shattered records.
Marking Sony Pictures Animation’s first global theatrical release since ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ in 2019, the film garnered critical acclaim and achieved remarkable box office feats. Surpassing its predecessor, it grossed an impressive $690.5 million worldwide, ranking as the third highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023. Notably, it claimed the title of Sony Pictures Animation’s highest-grossing film and clinched the Best Animated Film award at the National Board of Review. Furthermore, the American Film Institute honored it as one of the top 10 films of 2023.
With news of a third installment in the Spider-Verse saga on the horizon, speculation among fans has centered on the possibility of a live-action project featuring Miles Morales. During a recent conversation with Variety, Amy Pascal addressed fan anticipation, though details regarding the development of the promised live-action Miles Morales movie remain vague.
Someday. Not until we make two more movies. Someday.
Following Pascal’s ambiguous statement, fans interpreted her words as hinting at two additional animated Miles Morales movies. However, Christopher Miller stepped in on social media to clarify that the two films Pascal mentioned were actually ‘Spider-Man 4’ and ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.’
This certainly appears to be closer to becoming a reality than the prospect of two more animated movies. Recently, Miller disclosed that the third installment is currently in production.
“We’re in production… we’re really excited about where the story is going, I think it’s a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, and it’s as emotional as the other ones… we’re knee-deep in it.”
In December 2021, Lord and Miller officially announced the third installment in the ‘Spider-Verse’ series, originally titled ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two)’ with a planned release in 2023. However, by April 2022, it was renamed ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.’ Despite concerns about potential production delays, Lord and Miller emphasized the importance of taking sufficient time to ensure quality.
In July 2023, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the film was temporarily removed from the schedule, replaced by ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.’ However, following the resolution of the strike in November 2023, voice recording for the film resumed, with Lord and Miller confirming that they are deeply involved in the production process.
In addition to ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ a ‘Spider-Women’ spinoff is also in the works, focusing on three generations of female Spider-People. Notably, Lord and Miller are not directly involved in the spinoff; it is being written by Bek Smith and directed by Lauren Montgomery.
