Agathario Shippers Vindicated: Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal Confirmed as Agatha’s Love Interest
‘Agatha All Along’ premiered over a week ago with its first two episodes. While viewers initially loved it, critics gave it negative reviews. However, opinions have since balanced out. The show now holds an 83% critic rating and 81% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It also attracted a fairly large audience, which is surprising given that it centers on a less well-known character and features a storyline that might not appeal to casual Marvel fans.
The show put a strong emphasis on queer representation in the MCU, and while some casual fans may not always embrace these themes in recent superhero media, in “Agatha All Along,” they feel natural rather than forced, unlike many recent diversity-focused storylines.
Even before the show aired, Aubrey Plaza hinted at a deeper connection between Agatha and her character, Rio Vidal.
I can’t say much, but obviously my character and Kathryn’s character have a really long history, that’s very complicated and charged and all the things. Buckle up.
Fans have come up with numerous theories about Agatha and Rio Vidal’s past and what might have gone wrong between them. The speculation ranges from Agatha betraying Rio for more power to Agatha sacrificing their son to gain control of the Darkhold.
Shortly after Plaza’s comments, Kathryn Hahn also confirmed that there’s more to their relationship:
it felt super-charged every time we were doing any scenes together, which was thrilling.
The New York Times has now confirmed that Rio Vidal was indeed a former romantic interest of Agatha Harkness. In a recent interview with the magazine, Aubrey Plaza’s character was referred to as a “romantic antagonist.”
The first was the charming time-travel comedy “My Old Ass” on Sept. 13, followed by the Marvel series “Agatha All Along,” in which she plays the romantic antagonist to Kathryn Hahn’s “WandaVision” witch.
Whatever occurred between Agatha and Rio Vidal in the past is bound to be intriguing, especially given Plaza’s character, whose true identity was recently revealed through a Marvel merchandise leak.
Although Rio Vidal didn’t appear in episode 3, it’s possible she will step in as the Green Witch after Sharon Hart’s death, allowing the coven to continue their journey on the Witches’ Road.
