Marvel’s biggest event of the year is only weeks away, and the studio is slowly revealing more about what’s at stake. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18, with Anthony and Joe Russo directing and Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom.

The film marks the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga’s buildup, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027. Like ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, the 2 films were developed together, though they were not shot back-to-back.

Now fans have a fresh look at what the story holds. As Avengers Updates shared, a new synopsis for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reveals that “courageous teams from three universes must come together to prevent a catastrophic event” as a new existential threat emerges.

The synopsis names the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. According to the description, these teams “will need to put aside their suspicions of each other to work together against a force more powerful than any of these groups have faced before.”

The synopsis ends with a hint about the film’s long-term impact. It says the heroes’ “choices and actions in this crucial moment will lay the foundation for the future of the Multiverse.”

That framing fits earlier reporting on the film’s structure. An earlier synopsis, listed on Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, described universes colliding as the Multiverse Saga enters its final chapter.

According to Wikipedia’s summary of the plot, the Avengers, Wakandans and New Avengers come from Earth-616, the main MCU universe. The Fantastic Four hail from Earth-828, while the original X-Men come from a separate universe.

The story takes place 14 months after ‘Thunderbolts*’, and the heroes from all 3 worlds converge to face Doctor Doom. Joe Russo has teased that Downey’s villain is always 3 moves ahead.

The cast is one of Marvel’s largest yet. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach lead the Fantastic Four, while Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden return as Professor X, Magneto and Cyclops. Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Winston Duke’s M’Baku, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova are also part of the lineup.

Anticipation is already running high. Advance premium-format ticket sales reached $16.5 million in the first 24 hours in July, more than double the pre-sales for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, and climbed to $50 million by early September.

Global Box Office has projected a domestic opening weekend of $260 million to $300 million. Disney has said that 70% of advance tickets were for its new Infinity Vision format, as IMAX screens are committed to ‘Dune: Part Three’ for at least 3 weeks.

Principal photography began on April 28, 2025, at Pinewood Studios in England and wrapped on September 19, 2025, with additional filming in Bahrain. The screenplay is credited to Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

The film runs about 165 minutes, making it one of Marvel’s longest releases. With a cast this large and a story spanning multiple universes, that runtime may be necessary to bring everything together.

The new synopsis confirms that tension between the teams will be just as important as the threat they face. Whether these heroes can trust each other may decide the future of the entire MCU.
