Bella Ramsey Says It’s Important to Keep Gendered Emmy Categories

Bella Ramsey, star of HBO’s The Last of Us, has spoken out about gendered categories at the Emmy Awards. Even though they identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns, Ramsey says they are okay with being placed in the Lead Actress category.
Speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast on Spotify, Ramsey said they don’t mind how people refer to them:
“Call me how you see me,” they said.
Ramsey understands that there are no easy answers when it comes to gendered award categories. Still, they believe it’s important that women in the industry continue to be recognized.
“I don’t have the answer and I wish that there was something that was an easy way around it,” Ramsey explained. “But I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category.”
Ramsey has received a lot of praise for their role as Ellie in The Last of Us, and many believe they have a strong chance of being nominated for an Emmy this year. The discussion about gendered categories has been ongoing in Hollywood, especially as more non-binary actors gain recognition.
