Berserk Deluxe Edition Volume 14 release date and content

Berserk is a manga series written and drawn by Kentarō Miura. The story focuses on Guts, a cursed warrior forced to wander relentlessly to survive and seek vengeance. The story, initially of horror but gradually enriched with elements of the fantasy genre, explores the deepest recesses of human nature.

The main themes are the illusion of free will, the obscure and necessary power of violence, the destiny of man, and the omnipresence of evil. Both the anime and the manga are known for their raw violence.

The manga has been serialized in Japan by Hakusensha in the Young Animal series since 1989. Following the author’s death in May 2021, the series was continued by Kōji Mori and Miura’s assistants starting June 24, 2022. The success of the manga led to the creation, in 1997, of the first anime television series, of a trilogy of films between 2012 and 2013, titled Berserk – The Golden Age, and of a second television series in 2016, followed by a second season in 2017, as well as several video games.

Miura’s first work on what would become Berserk dates back to 1988 and is a 48-page one-shot titled Berserk – The Prototype. Already from this prototype, Miura’s interest in Hindu mythology, which will also be present in the serialized manga, was quite visible.

The chapter deals with the story of Guts, a forerunner of the protagonist of Berserk. The author wrote the work for the competition of the Manga Comi School of the Hakusensha publishing house. Satisfied with the product, the publishers offered him to serialize his work in what became the Berserk series. The stand-alone chapter was later released as a bonus in Volume 14 of the series and is associated with the Conviction Arc.

Berserk made its debut on August 25, 1989, on the pages of the Seinen magazine Monthly Animal House, which changed its name to Young Animal in 1992. Until 2006, the new chapters were published bimonthly every second and fourth Friday of the month. Subsequently, the publication became irregular, with frequent pauses and interruptions by Miura.

In July 2015, the series finally continued its publication on a regular monthly basis, except for new interruptions, the last of which was in the second half of 2017. The chapters are periodically collected in tankōbon volumes published by Hakusensha under the Jet Comics imprint. They have been published since 26 November 1990, initially on a six-monthly basis and subsequently irregularly.

On May 6, 2021, Miura passed away, leaving the manga unfinished and the future of the series up in the air. On June 7, 2022, the editorial staff of Young Animal announced the continuation of the manga on June 24, 2022. The work is supervised by the mangaka Kōji Mori, a friend of Miura to whom the author had revealed in broad terms the development and the conclusion of the story he had in mind, and by the previous curator of the series, and is designed by Studio Gaga, a collective formed by Miura’s aides.

The manga has been translated and exported to various countries around the world.

As for the collected editions, the manga was published in individual volumes, which were later grouped into special, exclusive Deluxe volumes that collected two or three volumes simultaneously. The Deluxe volumes were oversized, hardcover editions with special content and were, basically, collector’s editions of the series that were more lore-accurate than traditional manga volumes. So far, 13 Deluxe volumes have been published:
