This way, we can introduce all kinds of different stories and backgrounds. This is the point of certain movies, to reflect us and to make us feel seen. It is definitely clear that we have to push for further representation, not for it to be forced in any way but rather pull the projects that have been on hold or in the making for some time, stories that can represent a serious and lighthearted side of the spectrum. 1. Malcolm and Marie

This critically acclaimed movie was directed by Sam Levinson, who also wrote and directed the immensely popular TV show Euphoria. In this black and white film, we follow one night with a couple who comes home after a film premiere. Malcolm, played by John D. Washington, is a movie director whose first movie just premiered, and his wife Marie, played by Zendaya. We follow their relationship dynamics all evolving in one night, and their rollercoaster of emotions comes out for the audience watching. It’s a very vulnerable film that beautifully shows the good and bad sides of a relationship.

2. What Men Want

What Men Want is a BET+ original starring the brilliant Taraji P. Henson. Her character, Ali, is a lawyer at a men-dominated firm. She is excited and feels a promotion coming her way, where she is finally going to become a partner at the firm. Everything changes when they announce another colleague’s name. She is disappointed yet again and feels like her hard work goes unnoticed at the firm. Ali decides to take matters into her own hands and goes to a witch for advice, she drinks a potion that the witch recommended. The next day she realizes that she can hear the inner thoughts of men, and this helps her on her way to the top.

3. Cook Off

This movie follows the story of a single mother that has a passion for cooking. Her day-to-day life mostly revolves around her son, whom she loves and believes that he is the best thing she ever did, was to raise and love him. One day a cooking competition announced that they were looking for amateur chefs with a very high skill level, almost professional. She doesn’t want to enter the competition, believing that she is not skilled enough. Soon after that, her son tells her that he applied her to the competition because he believes in her.

4. Walk Away From Love

Micah is a single attorney that hasn’t been in a committed relationship in a couple of years. She has been dating around and found two partners that she really started to enjoy spending time with. With her daily life being mostly occupied with work, she started to develop feelings for both of the men. After some time, both men admitted to her that they wanted a relationship with her and that they were in love. She faces a hard decision when she’s not even sure if she wants to commit in the first place.

Deliver Us From Eva is a thriller drama movie released in 2003. Our main character Ray is played by LL Cool J, and he is what his friends would call the ultimate player. He is not interested in settling down, he wants to sleep around with different women, and he represents a god-like figure for his friends because of this. His reputation is that he can „score“ any woman he wants, but that all changes when he meets Eva. Ray was very confused at first as to why she was not taking his usual bait. After some time, he realizes that he’s developing feelings for her and finds her to be not only attractive but also a good person and potential companion.

6. Think Like A Man

Think Like A Man is a romantic comedy classic starring Kevin Heart, Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, and Chris Brown, to name a few of this A-list cast. We follow two groups of men and women who are going about the dating world in very different ways. All of their classical games fall into the background when Steve Harvey’s guide for women comes out. With this guide, the women start to weed out men who are just trying to hook up, but later on, the men figure out what they are doing. This leads them to try and use their tactics against them.

7. Fatal Affair

Fatal Affair is a thriller that takes us on a wild ride that at first seems like a regular story about an affair between two characters. Ellie has been married for several years now to her husband, they have a daughter together. Lately, she has been feeling that she is losing touch with her husband. She says she doesn’t recognize him anymore and what their relationship is supposed to be. This is also when she reunites with her old friend David, they go out for drinks and rekindle some old feelings. Ellie stops the affair just before it gets too far and decides to cut ties with David. Little did she know she would be making a very fatal mistake that wasn’t the affair itself.

8. Resort To Love

This next movie is very much light-hearted, unlike the last one. Resort To Love follows an aspiring singer Christina who decides to move to the Mauritius island resort and work there as a wedding and entertainment singer. Her engagement broke off a year ago, and she’s decided to focus on herself for a while. All of her plans are disrupted when she realizes that her ex-fiancee is getting married on the same island. She will even have to sing for his wedding, this, of course, stirs up some old wounds, and she doesn’t know what to do at that point. On the island, she meets a local whom she really enjoys spending time with, and it seems like it might grow into something more.

9. Potato Potahto

This romantic comedy follows the unfolding of a marriage. A husband and wife are forced to stay at their once-shared home together until the divorce is settled. These constant battles for space make for a really fun watch, it essentially plays to its comedic strengths. The relationship between the husband and the wife is shown as such a rollercoaster of crazy and funny situations that we all watch unfold.

10. The Black Godfather

We’re taking a little bit of a break from lighthearted romantic comedy movies and go to a real-life story that is truly inspirational. Clarence Avant is a music executive, among other things, but primarily he is a person who was creating opportunities for different black artists in America. So many influential artists and politicians have come together to talk about his way of becoming the black godfather.

Catching Feeling is a romantic drama filled with ups and downs for our main character Max. He and his wife have been having some problems, and it’s spilling over into their work life as well. They both meet an odd writer that totally shakes up their view of life. This makes for an interesting new development for themselves as individuals and as a couple.

12. Deuces

Deuces was released in 2017, and in this movie, we follow the story of a criminal organization ring that does all kinds of shady business. We have a couple of characters that lead this ring, and we see how difficult it is to regulate such an empire. One of the leaders is trying to start a relationship with a woman that doesn’t know what he really does for a living. Will this complicate their relationship, and if so, how?

13. Seriously Single

Dineo had just broken off her two-month engagement and is trying to live out her single life. Her best friend encourages her to go out and have fun, to forget about her ex, and try and move on. This is very difficult for Dineo because she feels like every time she starts to get comfortable in a relationship is when it usually falls apart. Will she get over her ex, and how will single life work out for her?

The Wedding Party is a romantic comedy that revolves around a wedding between two main characters of husband and wife-to-be. Very soon, we find out that their families have some differences that they are not really addressing. From one situation to the next, they keep stepping on each other’s mines which leads to escalation between them. Will the wedding actually happen, or will the families be too occupied fighting with each other to notice that the wedding has to start eventually?

15. When Love Happens

Mo is a young wedding planner that has always been happy with her career choice. Even so, it is very difficult for her to watch so many other weddings happening without thinking of her own potential arrangement like that. Everyone keeps asking her when she is setting her own date. She usually doesn’t know how to respond to that. She eventually decides to start online dating. How will that turn out for her?

16. The Holiday Calendar

If you are looking for a cozy Christmas movie, look no further. This romantic comedy will leave you wanting more, starring Kat Graham. This is a story about a young photographer named Abby who always wanted to chase her dreams of becoming a professional event and art photographer, but she is stuck at her regular job. During the holiday season, one of her old friends comes back to town, and so they reunite. With time she realizes that she has to let some of her old worries go and focus on herself for a change.

19. Love, Guaranteed

Nick is the main character of the story, he decides to sue a dating app company for not providing one quality relationship. Even though that’s what they claimed their app does. He meets a lawyer named Susan, who he hires for his case. They start their work on it and start to notice each other more. Eventually, Susan and Nick realize they might have quite a lot of things in common. Will they end up together, and will Nick win his case against the dating app company?

20. Naked

Rob is supposed to get married to his fiancee Megan, but a lot of things don’t go according to plan. It is their wedding day, and Rob wakes up naked in a hotel elevator. He has to run to his wedding because it’s about to begin, but he finds his clothes anywhere. He tries to get to his wedding, but the police arrest him for public nudity. After he falls asleep, he wakes up the next day in the elevator again, and eventually, we see that the day keeps repeating as he is trying to get to his wedding.
