Doctor Strange is today considered to be one of the best MCU movies. With an interesting plot and great actors, the movie has received praise from both fans and critics, who especially praised Cumberbatch’s performance.
Now, every movie is memorable for its quotes, and in this article, we are going to give you a list of the 35 best quotes from the Doctor Strange movie. Some of them are epic, some are fun, some are deep… bah, we have it all! Just relax and enjoy!
35. “Who’s laughing now, asshole?”
An illustration of Kaecilius’ powers, this quote showed us both how Strange had much to learn back then, and how powerful Kaecilius actually was. Strange managed to trap Kaecilius in a mirror dimension, thinking that he had won, but Kaecilius replied that it was him who was laughing and managed to create his own dimension from there. Strange’s plan did fail then but Kaecilius was ultimately stopped
34. “Master Kaecilius. That ritual will bring you only sorrow.”
This is one of the first lines in the movie, which explains to us how the feud between Kaecilius and the Ancient One began. Kaecilius’ quest for more power led him to explore the darker realms of the mystical arts, which, of course, led to the inevitable clash with the Ancient One. We all know how it all ended after Strange’s intervention, but this line was exceptionally important for the evolution of the movie’s narrative.
33. “No one could have done better.”
This one is related to quote #13 and illustrated Strange’s lack of humility. Namely, Strange suffered an accident that almost left him dead or, in the best-case scenario, crippled. His colleagues managed to save him and his arms, but he couldn’t really operate anymore, which frustrated him. Christine Palmer tried to tell him that no one could’ve done a better job with his hands but Strange had other ideas (see #13).
32. “Wise choice. You’ll wear the Eye of Agamotto… once you’ve mastered its powers. Until then… best not to walk down the streets wearing an Infinity Stone.”
Another Wong and Strange moment that made us laugh. The Eye of Agamotto was not just a powerful artifact, it was an Infinity Stone. Fearing its power, Strange decided to put it away, to which Wong remarked that it was a wise choice, seeing how it wouldn’t really be appropriate for people to see him walking around with an Infinity Stone on his chest. This would, of course, change later.
31. “Stephen. Everything is about you.”
Strange invited Christine to a Neurological Society dinner. She makes a witty remark and Strange is surprised, as he thought that she loved coming to such dinners with him; he thought they had fun. Christine replied that it was he who had had fun since all those events had been about him. Stephen tried to state that they weren’t just about him, to which Christine said what we quoted.
30. “No, Stephen. You lack a spine.”
When Strange said to Mordo that he lacked imagination, Mordo replied to Strange that he lacked a spine. The two initially shared strong respect for each other, even being friends, but as Strange’s spine grew, along with his imagination, Mordo was more and more frustrated with Strange’s behavior and that eventually led to him leaving and vowing revenge at the end of the movie.
29. “Well, don’t stop now.”
“I’m breaking the laws of nature. I know.” This is what Strange said to Wong as he was turning back time to save and resurrect him. Wong, who was a big guardian of the natural laws, would have been against it but even he said that Strange shouldn’t stop now, since his ass was on the line that time. One-nil for Wong.
28. “Thank you for the books and for the horrifying story and… for the threat upon my life.”
Strange was known to have a very sarcastic personality and his witty remarks made people laugh more often than not. This is just an example of his personality, as he commented on what had happened with a rather witty remark what had to land a spot on our list.
27. “I made a bargain.”
Strange managed to outwit Dormammu and he struck a bargain with him, a bargain that Kaecilius didn’t like in the end. Strange explained it: “Well, it’s everything you’ve ever wanted. Eternal life as part of the One. You’re not gonna like it.” Now, the catch was that Strange struck a bargain with Dormammu to trick Kaecilius and he ultimately succeeded.
26. “Try me, Beyoncé.”
Another one of Strange’s jokes at Wong’s one-word name, comparing him to celebrities that use a one-word name (see quote #10). Now, Strange honestly believed that Wong had heard of the R’n’B star, but he only got a pause. When he tried to provoke a smile or laughter, he also got a pause and just moved on.
25. “Study and practice. Years of it.”
This was a fun lesson. Strange wanted to know how to learn magic. The Ancient One asked this: “How did you get to reattach severed nerves and put a human spine back together bone by bone?” To which Strange replied with the above quote. Another mind-blowing experience where Strange, actually, answered his own question.
24. “You became a doctor to save one life above all others. Your own.”
Another memorable quote from the Ancient One, and another lesson for Strange. There have been so many in this movie and we really had to include a lot of them in this article. This lesson was another mind-blowing revelation that Strange’s ego refused to accept before.
23. “Don’t shut me out. I haven’t got anywhere else to go…”
Initially rejected from entering Kamar-Taj, Strange finally broke, being on the verge of tears. He pleaded with the Ancient One to let him inside, stating that he had nowhere to go anymore, and that was the bare truth. In this moment of desperation, he was completely alone and he had absolutely nowhere to go. Luckily, the Ancient One wasn’t all that bad to him.
22. “It’s just tea… with a little honey.”
Poor Strange entered the astral dimension for the first time, separating his soul from his body. For him, it was a completely bizarre experience so, naturally, as a man of science, he thought he was on drugs. Psylobicin? LSD? Nope, just simple tea with a dash of honey, as the Ancient One explained.
21. “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole. You’ve spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole… to see more, to know more. And now, on hearing that it can be widened, in ways you can’t imagine, you reject the possibility.”
This one is connected to quote #7 and represents the Ancient One’s views on life, as opposed to Strange’s. To her, life is intuition and a spiritual phenomenon. For Strange, as you’ll see, life is a scientific phenomenon.
20. “They really should put the warnings before this spell.”
Mordo said: “Temporal manipulations can create branches in time. Unstable dimensional openings. Spatial paradoxes! Time loops! You wanna get stuck reliving the same moment over and over forever or never having existed at all?” Strange replied with the above quote. A lesson on the dangers of certain spells. And quite funny.
19. “Because I see, at long last, what’s wrong with the world. Too many sorcerers.”
The endgame of the movie. Mordo was so shocked by Strange’s actions that his conservative ideals couldn’t really take it anymore. The natural law was broken and someone would have to pay for it. That is why he left but will come back for his revenge.
18. “Oh. So you joined a cult.”
Another memorable Christine Palmer quote, as she listened to Strange recount his experiences. Had the situation been opposite, we’re certain that Strange would have been even more vehement in his criticisms but Christine was just hilarious. And on point.
17. “Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are numbered. Your time is short. You’d think after all this time, I’d be ready. But look at me. Stretching one moment out into a thousand… just so that I can watch the snow.”
You have to connect this one to quote #5 and Strange’s readiness to become a sorcerer. This is a lesson about life, death, and the passing of time. Death is inevitable, even for the Ancient One, but she knows a way how to prolong the whole process.
16. “We never lose our demons, Mordo. We only learn to live above them.”
Mordo was the grade-A student of the class and very conservative when it comes to magic. Still, he respected it and even with all of his experience, the guy actually had a lot to learn, including this lesson taught to him by the Ancient One.
15. “Mister Doctor?”
Kaecilius meets Strange. Two formidable foes, one fight, and a funny scene that went down in history. The screenwriters did a great job with the wordplay here and this scene, although narratively irrelevant, became quite memorable.
14. “Have you ever seen that before in a gift shop?”
Related to #11, this quote is actually Strange’s first experience of what the Ancient One’s magic could do. It was a solid performance, real and palpable, dissuading Strange that it was all just a trick. Read #11 to see what happened next.
13. “I could have done better.”
A continuation of #33, this quote likewise shows the extent of Strange’s ego. He wasn’t grateful for his colleagues saving his life and not making him a cripple, he was angry because he thought that they had done a horrible job, stating that he could’ve done it better.
12. “Who are you in this vast Multiverse, Mr. Strange?”
To give you the whole context, this is the complete quote: “You think you know how the world works? You think that this material universe is all there is? What is real? What mysteries lie beyond the reach of your senses? At the root of existence, mind and matter meet. Thoughts shape reality. This universe is only one of an infinite number. Worlds without end. Some benevolent and life giving. Others filled with malice and hunger. Dark places where powers older than time lie ravenous… and waiting.”
11. “Teach me.”
A simple plea. A simple rejection. Strange wasn’t ready at the time. He was fascinated by what he had seen, but he wasn’t ready to take it in. He perceived it all as a game, not knowing the true depths behind the whole concept.
10. “Just Wong? Like Adele?”
“Or Aristotle. Drake. Bono… Eminem.” This was Strange’s reaction to Wong’s name. It was funny, really, especially since Wong, the librarian, had absolutely no clue who these people were. As you’ve seen, Beyoncé was also relevant at one point.
9. “You cannot beat a river into submission. You have to surrender to its current and use its power as your own.”
“I control it by surrendering control? That doesn’t make any sense”, said Strange. It didn’t make sense, but the Ancient One explained that not everything has to and that he was a slave to his intellect. He had to surrender to instinct and he did.
8. “People think in terms of good and evil when really time is the true enemy of us all.”
Kaecilius thought that he found the real culprit – time. Time kills everything, he said. And that is true – you cannot really escape the passing of time but you can trick it, from his perspective. This is an example of comic book magic and a relevant element to the plot.
7. “You’re just another tiny, momentary speck within an indifferent universe.”
A lot of the quotes here, as you can see tackled both Strange’s ego and his perception of life and whatnot. This quote is another one, where he actually challenged the Ancient One by saying: “No, I reject it because I do not believe in fairy tales about chakras or energy or the power of belief. There is *no* such thing as spirit! We are made of matter and nothing more.” He finished with the above quote.
6. “The Wi-Fi password.”
We’re not savages! Of course, they aren’t; they’re a bunch of well-educated, sophisticated magicians and while they do have magic, they still need Wi-Fi. When Strange heard the word “Shambala”, a cultural reference itself, he thought it was a mantra but it was actually the Wi-Fi password.
5. “We don’t get to choose our time.”
A lesson on life and death that hit Strange’s ego quite hard. Sure, no one’s ready to die, but Stephen strange wasn’t ready for anything bad in his life. How could he have been ready for death? There is a point to be taken here and the Ancient One explained it quite well (see #17), changing, once again, Strange’s perception.
4. “The bill comes due. Always.”
Okay, Strange saves the day, saves Wong and all’s fine and dandy, right? Well, yes… unless you ask Mordo. Mordo was horrified that Strange broke the natural law to save the day, criticizing both him and the Ancient One for doing so, before closing off with the above quote: “You think there will be no consequences, Strange? No price to pay? We broke our rules, just like her.”
3. “Forget everything you think you know.”
New beginnings are always special and for Stephen Strange, a man of science, experiencing magic was an unbelievable experience. But, as Mordo said to him before this quote: “I once stood in your place. And I, too, was… disrespectful. So, might I offer you some advice?” The advice… you know it.
2. “It’s not about you.”
There was a lesson to be learned here for Doctor Strange, a character who had, until his accident, had it all. Now that he lost his main tool, he had to go back to being humble, which was hard for him. The Ancient One explained that it was not about him, adding: “Arrogance and fear still keep you from learning the simplest and most significant lesson of all.”
1. “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain.”
Probably the most important quote of the movie, this scene was another example of Marvel’s funny climaxes, where Doctor Strange realized that he can beat Dormammu by putting him in an endless loop, which exhausted the demonic entity and allowed Strange to strike a bargain to save the day.
