FPS games aren’t really known to be deep and philosophical, but the Halo franchise features such expansive lore and memorable characters that it often goes into a deeper philosophy. The verdict of the community is still divided on whether Halo: Reach was a good game or a bad game, but one thing is undeniable, the game did have some pretty memorable lines delivered in the heat of the battle and left a mark on the fans of the franchise due to numerous sacrifices being made. 1. Lieutenant Commander Catherine-B320: “That thing’s crushing us, and we’re waiting for backup? They’ll be backing up a graveyard.”

This line was spoken during the “Long Night of Solace.” NOBLE Team is ready to make their way toward the next objective while UNSC is completely helpless against Covenant Supercarrier called “Long Night of Solace.” This line describes how hopeless the situation was.

2. Jen (COM): “UNSC Savannah. Our wings may be clipped, but we’ve got your back.”

Spoken during the same level as the previous quote, Jen says they will provide the support despite all odds.

3. Shell-shocked Army trooper: “Oh, God! I didn’t sign up for this! Not aliens, man! That’s it, I am out! Seriously, we’re fighting aliens now? Innies were bad enough, now we got freakin’ aliens? Not me man. I’m out! O-U-T, out! Lemme tell you, whatever you do, don’t let them bite you. I hear if one of those little ones bites you, you turn into one! This was spoken during “New Alexandria” level. With your primary objective, you also need to help the UNSC with secondary objectives providing assistance to both civilians and soldiers alike. This is a dialogue that can be heard from one traumatized soldier whose mind cannot comprehend the horrors he’s seen during the fall of the reach.

4. Halsey: “Do you? Mankind is outmatched. When Reach falls – and it will fall – our annihilation is all but certain. Unless…we can glean from this artifact a defense against the Covenant. A game-changer. On the level of the conical bullet in the nineteenth century, or faster-than-light travel in the twenty-third.”
Carter-A259: “And what if we can’t?”
Halsey: “An apt question, if there were somewhere else to place our hope. There is not.”

Spoken by Doctor Halsey during “The Package” level. Halsey will let you know that the package (artifact) you are supposed to safeguard and deliver is your humanity’s only hope against the Covenant currently. The problem is, no one is quite sure what it does and if their hope is misplaced, it might as well spell doom for humanity.

5. Halsey: “But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor – all burned and turned to glass. Everything…except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild.”

This quote was spoken during the “Lone Wolf” level, it’s the final level in Halo: Reach and the most depressing one as you can see shots of glassed Reach. Halsey narrates the final moments of the game describing how basically nothing remains of the Spartans except for their courage which will be used to inspire new generations and to rebuild humanity in its darkest hours.

This line was spoken by Carter-A259 and it’s a funny and sad nod to the UNSC propaganda regarding Spartans. The thing with Spartans is that if they “die” during the mission they are always pronounced missing in action. There is a good reason for that, Spartans aren’t supposed to die, they are supposed to be the symbols of courage and immortality and were supposed to be undefeated against all odds. So when you hear that Spartan is Missing in action, you can count on him or her being dead, the UNSC just doesn’t want other marines and soldiers to lose morale.

7. Carter-A259: Not gonna lie to you, Lieutenant – you’re stepping into some shoes the rest of the squad would rather leave unfilled. Me, I’m just happy to have Noble back up to full strength. Just one thing – I’ve seen your file, even the parts the ONI censors didn’t want me to. Glad to have your skillset. But we’re a team. That lone wolf stuff stays behind. Clear?

Spoken by Carter-1259 as Spartan-B312 is being introduced to the team during “Noble Actual.” It shows just how much Spartans rely on teamwork and how difficult it is for them to forget their fallen comrades.

Halo: Reach was a game filled with loss, sacrifice, and death, and Jorge was just one of the many characters who sacrificed themselves because they were sure that humanity would ultimately prevail against the covenant.
