The Poké Ball is an essential item in the Pokémon franchise. It allows a trainer to capture wild Pokémon and thereby strengthen their team and advance on their journeys. The Poké Ball was initially just a simple red-white ball, but as the franchise evolved, different types of Poké Balls have been introduced with different effects.

In this guide, we are going to bring you a list of the best and most useful Poké Balls in the Pokémon video games. The Poké Balls are going to be ranked from 20th to 1st place.

Best Poké Balls

The list is going to contain a diverse list of Poké Balls, introduced since Generation I of the video games. These balls all have the same function, but their functionality is quite different, as some are focused on specific types or conditions, while others are of a general nature. Here are the 20 best Poké Balls in the franchise:

20. Heal Ball

HealBall

The chance of catching corresponds to that of a normal Pokéball. However, in contrast to other balls, the Pokémon is completely healed and can therefore be used immediately in a fight.

At night and in caves (with the exception of the miracle caves in Hoenn), the chance of catching with a Dusk Ball since the seventh generation has been three times as high as that of a normal Poké Ball, and up to the sixth generation it is 3.5 times as high under these conditions. Otherwise, the chance of catching is the same as that of the Poké Ball.

17. Love Ball

LoveBall

This ball is specially designed for Pokémon of the opposite sex. The chance of catching Pokémon of the same species and of the opposite sex increases to eight times that of a normal Poké Ball. Genderless Pokémon are not affected by this effect.

Due to a developmental error, the effect is reversed in the second generation and affects Pokémon of the same species and gender. Genderless Pokémon are also affected here.

FastBall

This ball was developed in the second generation to catch fleeing Pokémon such as Entei, Raikou and Suicune. With these, the chance of catching should be four times that of a normal Poké Ball. However, due to a development error, this bonus is only activated for some Pokémon.

In the fourth generation, the effect was changed so that the corresponding bonus is activated for Pokémon with a basic initiative of 100 or more. For all other Pokémon, the chance of catching is the same as that of the Poké Ball.

DiveBall

This ball was specially developed for use underwater. Pokémon that are found underwater have a 3.5 times higher chance of being caught than a normal Poké Ball.

Since Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green, this effect no longer only applies underwater, but also for Pokémon that are hit by fishing or surfing. This special effect does not work on the land, which means that the chance of catching is equivalent to that of the Poké Ball.

If your own Pokémon is stronger, the chance of catching it is twice as high. If your own level is at least twice as high, a level ball has four times as high a chance of catching it. If your own level is four times as high as that of the opponent, the chance of catching it is eight times as high as that of the Poké Ball.

Timer Ball

This ball is specially designed for long-lasting fights. While the catch chance in the first nine rounds corresponds to that of a normal Poké Ball, it increases from the tenth. From the first use, the chance of catching increases by one every nine rounds, with the maximum chance of catching four times the chance of catching a Poké Ball.

Accordingly, the chances of catching with this Poké Ball are twice as high between the 10th and 19th rounds and three times as high between the 20th and 29th rounds as with a Poké Ball.

In Pokémon Black and White, the ball has been further developed so that the catch chance increases to four times the catch chance in the tenth round.

2. Ultra Ball

Ultra Ball anime

Like the Poké Ball, the Ultra Ball is used to catch Pokémon, but its chance of catching is significantly higher than that of the Poké Ball and also higher than that of the Great Ball. So it is best suited to catch strong, rare, or even legendary Pokémon.
