Even though no one wants to even think about the possibility of seeing a shark while swimming in the sea or the ocean, many of us don’t have anything against watching movies about sharks and their attacks, hopefully as moderate as possible. Unfortunately, those movies are mostly anything but optimistic, and very often the audience has to deal with brutal scenes and a not-so-happy ending. In this list, we bring you the 18 best shark movies on Amazon Prime to stream right now.
Jaws (1975)
What it’s about: Jaws is without any doubt the best and most popular and beloved shark movie of all time. It is an adventure thriller about a killer shark who begins to terrorize the beach community around Cape Cod. Brody, Quint, and Cooper, the local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seaman are the ones who will have to try and capture the beast threatening the people in their town.
Why you should watch it: Mostly thanks to the brilliant directing by Steven Spielberg and masterful performances by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss, this movie has a place on the list of one of the most influential movies of all time. It has a good storyline and it is intense and suspenseful with excellent special effects and when we come to think that it was filmed in 1975, this makes even more sense.
Toxic Shark (2017)
What it’s about: This movie which is a mix of various genres takes us to the coast of Puerto Rico and its tropics singles resort where. But everything is far from perfect, due to the toxicity levels in the water and the staff that is mysteriously disappearing. It soon becomes obvious there is an infected and poisonous shark threatening everyone at the resort.
Why you should watch it: This is a solid Saturday afternoon flick with a pretty good cast and a storyline that can be followed without too much exertion. It is bloody and gory but if you have nothing against these kinds of scenes, you might even be amused by this action-horror adventure.
Galapagos: Realm of Giant Sharks (2012)
What it’s about: This is an educational video about a group of researchers and scientists who travel to Darin Island to track sharks and learn about their migration patterns. In order to study them they have to place tracking devices on them which is often more difficult than anticipated, due to currents and shark behavior in general.
Why you should watch it: This is an interesting and well-shot documentary about the shale sharks living around the Galapagos islands. It gives the viewers a good insight into these fascinating creatures. Since the diving conditions there are pretty dangerous, this is the best way to see them and learn more about them.
6-Headed Shark Attack (2018)
What it’s about: The movie takes place on the remote island of Isla Corazon, somewhere off the coast of Mexico. The seemingly idealistic place becomes a living nightmare when it is attacked by a six-headed shark that begins getting rid of the visitors one by one. The question that remains is who is behind this lethal machine.
Why you should watch it: This is one of those movies you keep returning to even if you don’t know why. But if you like shark movies, you might even find it fun and amusing at times. It is predictable and it doesn’t bring anything new but don’t be surprised if you keep going back for more.
Shark! (1969)
What it’s about: Burt Reynolds plays a gunrunner who loses his cargo somewhere near a small coastal town in Sudan. He is hired by a local woman to raid a sunken ship which is located in a place full of sharks. He believes this is the way he can compensate for his losses, completely unprepared for what expects him there.
Why you should watch it: This is a solid movie that Burt Reynolds fans won’t be so thrilled about. But if you don’t compare it with his other works and if you are a shark movie fan you might find it interesting and actually enjoy it.
Virus Shark (2021)
What it’s about: The world is threatened by a new kind of virus, the one spread by a shark bite. A group of researchers find themselves deep under the ocean, desperately trying to find the cure to this disease. But the biggest problem arises when some of them get infected by something and have to get to the surface before they are all killed by themselves.
Why you should watch it: Even though this is a really bad movie, this single fact might make it interesting to watch it. The curiosity to see it and compare it to some other shark movies might be too strong and you might even find it so ridiculous and funny to actually like it at a certain point.
Sharknado (2013)
What it’s about: Southern California is in great danger after a terrifying hurricane off the coast of Mexico. It “woke up” a shiver of sharks that are now swimming to the north, threatening the residents of these towns. Finley “Fin” Shepard heads to Beverly Hills to warn his estranged wife April and their teen daughter Candice. He embarks on this perilous journey with his friends, trying to survive and save themselves from these crazy creatures.
Why you should watch it: Sharknado has somehow become a classic among shark movies, one that always comes to mind when the topic is discussed. It is probably due to the bad things that make it so memorable. If you want to have a good time, without thinking at all and, above all, if you are a shark movie fan, you might even find it watchable.
Jaws 2 (1978)
What it’s about: This story happens four years after the horrifying shark attack at Amity Island that no one will ever forget. After the beast is destroyed, the Amity Island visitors and residents are living a peaceful life. But after the opening of a new Holiday Inn, once again beachgoers are beginning to disappear and Brody, who experienced the first attacks, is afraid that the past might be repeating itself.
Why you should watch it: Don’t compare it to Spielberg’s masterpiece. And if you don’t do it, you will probably enjoy it since it is not bad at all. It is interesting to see what is going on with Brody and his family and friends four years after the catastrophe and the story itself is once again pretty intriguing.
The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time (2018)
What it’s about: After a series of shark attacks in many sequels of Sharknado, Fin Shepard, the veteran shark hunter has a new obstacle to deal with. There is a Sharkzilla, an unexpected time traveler, and an important rescue mission. In order to save themselves and the world today, they will have to go back to the first Sharknado and write a new history.
Why you should watch it: Once again, don’t expect too much from this movie. It is completely aware of its flaws and it doesn’t try to be more than it is. It is fun, hilarious, and irrational but if you are a fan of the franchise itself, you will have to watch this one, as well.
Open Water (2003)
What it’s about: This is a horror drama thriller about Susan and David, a couple on a Caribbean holiday who decide to spend the day on a scuba diving trip. But their day couldn’t have gone worse. After a miscount on the boat, they are left in the middle of the ocean, stranded and alone, and soon about to be threatened by a school of sharks starting to surround them.
Why you should watch it: This is not a movie full of special effects and scenes that will make you jump off your seat all the time. It is slow and suspenseful and it asks its viewers to think while watching, imagining themselves there and trying to figure out what is going on.
Shark Exorcist (2015)
What it’s about: In this supernatural horror, a demonic nun summons Satan to a small fishing village where he takes over the bodies of a white shark and a young woman. After a series of gruesome deaths, a Catholic priest arrives and is faced with dangers from both the land and the sea.
Why you should watch it: Be aware that this is a B-movie that really doesn’t want to be serious. It is full of flaws but at the same time amusing to everyone who doesn’t expect anything from a movie and wants to see what some filmmakers are ready to make just to be featured in theatres or videos.
Jaws 3 (1983)
What it’s about: Years have passed after Brody electrocuted the last white shark threatening his town and in this sequel, we follow his sons, Mike and Sean, who work at Sea World Orlando. The park can be accessed from the ocean by a great number of doors, but one doesn’t work. This results in a baby shark leaving the park and its mother going out to get him. But when the baby dies, the mother starts its bloody rampage and becomes a huge threat to the park and its visitors.
Why you should watch it: Another movie that shouldn’t be taken too seriously but one you will probably watch, especially if you are following Brody and his family’s adventures. It is better in 3D where things look a bit more realistic and interesting.
The Shallows (2016)
What it’s about: Blake Lively plays Nancy who thought her surfing days will be a blast. And they start like that but soon end up in a nightmare. Surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself stranded 200 yards from the shore, alone and unable to contact anyone. But the problems begin when she realizes that she is in the middle of a great white shark’s feeding ground.
Why you should watch it: This is a pretty good B-movie, with an interesting story, a great atmosphere, and a remarkable performance by Blake Lively. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails all the time and hoping for Nancy to be brave enough to fight this dangerous creature away.
The Reef (2010)
What it’s about: A group of friends set off on a sailboat, ready to have a good time but they find themselves in problems very soon. The vessel hits an underground rock and ends up with an opening on the bottom. Four of them decide to swim up North to reach Turtle Island and one decides to stay on the boat. It becomes a good decision since the group is soon attacked by a great white shark.
Why you should watch it: This is a pretty good movie, interesting and adrenaline-packed. Unlike some other shark movies, there is a really good shark on-screen time. It is also a psychological study of human nature and it shows us how certain people behave in some situations. It is a good combination of drama and thriller, with believable performances.
The Meg (2018)
What it’s about: Naval Captain Jonas Taylor had to abort his mission in the recesses of the Mariana Trench five years ago. He also left half of his crew there, which led to great tragedy and cost him his career and marriage. No one believed him when he spoke about an enormous beast that caused the tragedy but when the same thing happens now he is the one who will accept a new mission and try to save everyone trapped at the bottom of the ocean.
Why you should watch it: This is not a bad movie and if you are a Jason Statham fan, you will probably enjoy it. The special effects are ok, the story itself very interesting and it might be a pleasant hour and a half watch for everyone who wants to have a good time.
47 Meters Down (2017)
What it’s about: Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play Lisa and Kate, two sisters who decide to explore the deep blue sea. But they never expected to encounter a creature thirsty for blood as they found themselves 47 meters under the sea. While trying to get to the surface, they will slowly start losing oxygen, and finds themselves racing against time and fighting for their lives.
Why you should watch it: This is not only a shark movie. It is also a very intense survival movie where the main protagonists have to think clearly and rationally in order to save themselves. Holt and Moore are brilliant in their roles and the overall atmosphere of the movie is very good,
Jaws: The Revenge (1983)
What it’s about: The story goes on and in this movie, we follow Brody’s widow and the rest of her family once again attacked by a great white shark. She is convinced that her family is deliberately chased by another shark seeking revenge for all the other ones killed by Brody and his family and friends.
Why you should watch it: If you are a Jaws fan, you will probably want to see this movie, as well. Don’t expect anything similar to the original but a decent movie that gives us a new insight into Brody’s family, this time from his widow’s perspective, with a few memorable supporting roles.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
What it’s about: A businessman decides to invest 200 million dollars into a special project to help fight Alzheimer’s disease. It is an underwater study connected with sharks that goes awry when the ambitious marine biologist Susan McAlester finds a way to enlarge shark brains to harvest the disease-battling enzymes. But the sharks become extremely intelligent and are not ready to be kept in cages and decide to break out and head to the open sea.
Why you should watch it: This is an intense and interesting shark movie directed by Renny Harlin, with Thomas Jane and Saffron Burrows in leading roles. It is adrenaline-packed and enjoyable enough, making it a pretty solid sci-fi shark movie.
