Star Wars is in a strange place right now. Its last live-action project, The Acolyte, didn’t do well and was canceled after just 8 episodes. The upcoming series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, set to release in December, isn’t getting the buzz the studio hoped for and seems to be facing issues behind the scenes.
Recently, a new Star Wars trilogy was announced, written by Simon Kinberg, but the reaction to it was mostly negative.
Despite this, there are still many live-action Star Wars projects in the works. Industry insider Daniel Richtman recently shared updates on all of them through his private Patreon.
Let’s start with Mangold’s movie, which will tell the story of the origins of the Jedi and the Force.
At Celebration Europe on April 7, 2023, it was announced that Mangold would direct a Star Wars film called Dawn of the Jedi. The movie will focus on how the Jedi were formed and how the Force was discovered. Mangold wants the film to have an epic feel, similar to classic movies like The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur. He used these films to convince Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm that his idea had great potential.
I thought about a biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments and the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it? And a story just started developing.James Mangold
According to Richtman, Mangold’s Jedi movie is set to begin filming next year, but other details are still unknown.
The second update is about Rey’s solo movie, which has faced some setbacks recently. The writer, Steven Knight, left the project after working on the script for a few months. Richtman now says the movie has found a new writer, but we don’t know who it is yet.
As for Ahsoka, the show was somewhat successful, and a second season was announced a few months after the first. However, Richtman now reports that season 2 is being planned as if it might be the final season, in case the show doesn’t get renewed for more.
This is a bit concerning, but it’s probably better to have a clear ending than no ending at all if the show gets canceled.
Finally, Richtman says that Dave Filoni’s Star Wars movie is set to begin production in 2026. The film will be set during the New Republic Era and will focus on a battle between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnants. It will also wrap up the storylines from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other related Disney+ shows.
