Bleach: Are Jugram and Buzz-B Friends or Brothers? Relationship Explained!

And while the Sternritter are best known as the antagonists of Bleach, Tite Kubo has, despite all the issues surrounding the final arc, provided us with an insight into some of the Sternritters’ personal lives and relationships. Two of them are going to be the topic of this article, and they are Jugram Hascwhalth and Bazz-B. Now, Jugram and Bazz-B have a much closer relationship than the other Sternritter, and there is a very good reason for that. Knowing their shared history, we cannot but wonder whether Jugram and Bazz-B are brothers, as their relationship is certainly more than simply professional. In that aspect, we have decided to write this article, in which we will reveal whether Jugram and Bazz-B are brothers and what kind of relationship they have.

Jugram Haschwalth and Bazz-B are not brothers. In fact, they are not related at all, but they are childhood friends and seem to be among the rare Quincy who actually knew each other since childhood. Both of them were children during the Lichtreich, and Bazz-B one day met Jugram and decided to become his friend and mentor. But, Yhwach soon chose Jugram to become his right-hand man, and that caused a rift between the two of them, a rift that was never properly closed.

The rest of this article will explore Jugram’s relationship with Bazz-B while focusing, in particular, on the nature of their relationship and whether they are related by blood or not, which is also the main and principal question of this article. If you’re not fully up-to-date with the events of Bleach, this article might contain some important spoilers, but we have to state that no new information will be presented here, as we will focus on old and well-known facts about the two of them.

Jugram Haschwalth and Bazz-B were childhood friends, but their relationship has deteriorated over the years

We all know that the ending of Bleach was rushed and that Tite Kubo, due to various health issues, had to cut the manga short, and that the editors gave him a year to finish the whole story. And while, from a narrative standpoint, the story was concluded, it is obvious that a lot of things were cut from the original idea and that the whole concept was significantly rushed, especially when you compare the commitment that Kubo showed while writing the Arrancar Saga.

In the original major saga of Bleach, the battles were balanced out, the characters were brilliantly written, and a lot was put into character development and showing the backstories of Espada and the other characters as well.

During the Quincy Blood War Saga, we only got a glimpse of Kubo’s amazing talent, as only a couple of battles were great, and character development was cut to a minimum. In fact, save for Yhwach, we never really found out anything about most of the Sternritter, even the major ones. But, even under such circumstances, two characters have gotten a backstory, and we will present it to you here. The two characters in question are Jugram Haschwalth and Bazz-B; this is their story.

‘Bleach’: How Does an Arrancar Become an Espada?

The first episode of the second cour of Bleach episodes showed us how Yhwach decided to name Uryu Ishida as his successor, which caused a lot of discord among the Sternritter. In an extended scene showing a lot of them, Bazz-B, the Sternritter “H” – “The Heat,” was one of the loudest in expressing his anger with the decision.

And while Jugram Haschwalth, the Sternritter “B” – “The Balance,” was there to hear that, he said nothing. Most of the other Sternritter respected Jugram because he was considered to be Yhwach’s right-hand man, but not Bazz-B. He accused Jugram of being a coward as he said nothing to Yhwach, although everyone believed that Jugram would succeed Yhwach, which was – from an objective standpoint – the logical thing to expect. But, Jugram simply brushed off his comments, stating that Yhwach’s word is final and that he is not there to question it.

Bazz-B showed little to no respect towards Jugram, and had Askin Nakk Le Vaar not intervened, the two of them would have fought then and there. But they did not. And while this scene was just a brief one, it implied that the two of them had a special relationship, as Bazz-B was quite liberal in his approach to Jugram.

And that is actually true – the two of them have known each other for a long time, and they were, once, a long time ago, friends. They are also the only two Sternritter whose backstory was given, which is quite sad, as many other interesting characters among the Sternritter definitely deserved a backstory, but that is a thing we can only cry over because Kubo did not have the time to do what he wanted to and because the publishers were too harsh on him.

So, what happened with them? Their story actually began 1,000 years ago during Yhwach’s original Lichtreich. After consolidating the Lichtreich, Yhwach started recruiting powerful Quincy for an assault on Soul Society, ultimately ending in his defeat at the hands of Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto. But, during that flashback, we’ve also gotten a glimpse of a young Jugram and a young Bazz-B, whose full name is revealed to be Bazzard Black.

Jugram Haschwalth was a lonely boy who lived with his, as was implied, a very abusive uncle, whom he was afraid of. He was almost powerless in that aspect and couldn’t even create a proper Quincy Bow, which was the basic ability of Quincy. He kept practicing daily, but his powers didn’t really improve that much.

In the same place where he was practicing, another boy, dressed as a knight, was also honing his skills, and that was Bazz-B. As the two of them met, Bazz-B decided to call Jugram Jugo, while Jugram called Bazz-B Bazz. Seeing how weak he was, Bazz-B wanted to protect and help Jugram, which is why made him his friend and lackey in a way; happy to be around someone, Haschwalth accepted without much afterthought.

And while Bazz-B’s powers increased significantly, Jugram’s did not, and when Yhwach came to collect recruits, he picked Jugram as his right-hand man, despite his age and lack of powers.

This made Bazz-B angry, but that was not the only change – namely, happy to have been chosen by the Majesty himself, Jugram changed, and he simply forgot about Bazz-B. Why did Yhwach choose him? Well, Jugram Haschwalth had, like Yhwach, the same power to give other Quincy power, while his own did not increase; this is why Bazz-B became so powerful in such a short time, and as Yhwach needed someone like him (such Quincy were born rarely), he took Jugram as his protege.

This is, actually, when their friendship broke. Jugram became loyal to Yhwach and forgot about Bazz, while Bazz was jealous and angry, not solely because Yhwach chose Jugram over him, but because he – who was also lonely as a child – lost a friend. Proof of this is the fact that Bazz-B kept calling Haschwalth Jugo until the very end, while Hascwhalth stopped calling him Bazz a long time ago. So no, they were not brothers but were close friends when they were children.
