Bleach: Did BG9 Kill Mareyo Ōmaeda? Difference Between Manga & Anime Explained!

Bleach is finally back with its second cour of the Thousand-Year Blood War anime, and the fight between Quincy and the Shinigami is finally heating up, with the anime set to expand on the rushed manga panels and bring us a complete experience of the Quincy Blood War. And while we’ve talked about some completely new concepts introduced to the anime, there are also some of them that have been changed in the anime. And while that usually isn’t a major issue, the fate of Omaeda’s younger sister, Mareyo, as well as the whole dialogue, was significantly changed in the anime, and in this article, we are going to tell you what happened to Mareyo Omaeda in the series.
Mareyo Omaeda was at her brother’s side when he was attacked by BG9, the Sternritter “K,” who wanted to know where Soifon was. Omaeda did not tell him because he did not know, despite the torture BG9 had subjected to him. He then threatened to hurt Mareyo, and in the manga, he really did pierce her, while in the anime, Omaeda jumped in front of her and saved her from the attack. Moments later, Soifon came and saved both of them. And while her story changed significantly, Mareyo, luckily, survived in both instances, so the end result is the same.
The rest of this article will focus on Mareyo Omaeda and her role in Kubo’s Bleach series. We know that Omaeda’s younger sister is a secondary character, but because her story was altered in the anime in comparison to the manga, we wanted to explain the difference and tell you whether the change influenced her overall fate in any way. This article will contain some spoilers, so if you’re not fully up-to-date with everything, you have been warned.
Despite the significant change in the anime, Mareyo Omaeda’s fate remains the same in both cases
To properly explain what happened, we shall tell you first how BG9, the Sternritter “K,” was even involved with Omaeda, i.e., why, out of all the other members of the Gotei 13, he came to him specifically. This was settled during the first invasion of the Seireitei. BG9, of course, attacked Soul Society with the other Sternritter, killing several Shinigami.
He later fought Captain Soifon and Marechiyo Omaeda. To gain information on how the Sternritter sealed their Bankai, Soifon activated hers, but she discovered that BG9 did not seal but rather stole their Bankai. Before finishing her off, BG9 retreated with the other Quincys when their leader gave the order to retreat.
When the Wandenreich attacked the Seireitei for the second time, BG9 went to search for Soifon, as Yhwach had given out the order that the Sternritter who had managed to steal the Bankai should kill those Captains whose Bankai they had stolen.
This is why BG9 appeared in front of the Ōmaeda family home. Before his arrival, Marechiyo Omaeda had been observing the changes in the Seireitei when his younger sister, Mareyo Omaeda, approached him and asked him to come with them to safety, but Omaeda told her that they should leave, but that he had to stay because he is a member of the Gotei 13 and he has to stay so he can protect her, the rest of their family and their neighbors. And while Mareyo was still there, BG9 appeared.
A fight ensued between Marechiyo Ōmaeda and BG9, with BG9 wanting Omeda to tell him where Soifon was. Omaeda explained to him several times that he didn’t know and that he would have already told him had he actually known. But Quincy didn’t believe him, and after losing his patience, he attacked his little sister. And this is where the manga and the anime differ significantly.
In the original manga, BG9 pierced and seriously wounded Mareyo, taking her hostage. He then added that he would kill everyone in Omaeda’s family if they didn’t finally answer him. However, this only ensured that the Lieutenant’s anger was stoked, and he attacked in a rage but was easily defeated. When BG9 was ready to land the finishing blow, Soifon came and took over the fight.
On the other hand, the anime changed the story. BG9 did threaten to attack Mareyo, but in the anime, Omaeda jumped in front of her just in time and was pierced instead, with Mareyo suffering no damage whatsoever. BG9 would then activate his machine gun to kill Omaeda and his sister, but Captain Soifon came at that exact moment and managed to save Omaeda, taking over the fight.
She used her mastered Shunko against BG9, but it had very little effect. It was revealed that Quincy is actually a robot and therefore survived the attack, after which he launched his counterattack. BG9 appeared to be clearly dominating the fight when Soifon suddenly received help from Kisuke Urahara, who gave her and the other Captains a pill that gave her some Hollow Reiatsu.
Due to the bond between Zanpakuto and Bankai, the Reiatsu was also transferred to BG9, causing him to reject and return the Bankai, as in any other case, it would have resulted in his death. Re-equipped with her Bankai, Soifon landed a critical hit on BG9. However, due to BG9’s Quincy Vollständig, he was able to survive and escape from the battle.
So, what happened to Mareyo? We know what happened to BG9 and Soifon and that Omaeda survived, but what about Mareyo? Well, the change, we can confirm it, didn’t do anything to her fate, as Mareyo survived in both the manga and the anime, so the anime producers could change this scene without causing any trouble. In the manga, she survived and was ultimately healed; in the anime, she was taken to safety.
