Bleach: Is Lieutenant Izuru Kira Dead? What Happened to Him?

Regarding Bleach characters, one of the characters who needed a lot more attention was the 3rd Division’s Lieutenant, Izuru Kira. He had a very interesting power, as his Wabisuke was an enormously powerful Zanpakuto and quite skilled in Kido. But, aside from that, Izuru Kira had a very interesting personality as well, and his backstory was also brilliant, especially in light of his relationship with his two Captains, initially Gin Ichimaru, whom he loyally served, and later Rojuro Otoribashi, whom he never truly accepted as his Captain, despite Rose holding him in high regard. Izuru Kira had a fatal encounter with the Sternritter at the beginning of the new arc and has not been seen since, so it is natural that you might wonder what happened to him. In this article, we will tell you whether Izuru Kira died in Bleach or not and what happened to him in the story.
Despite suffering a fatal injury after being attacked by Bazz-B, Lieutenant Izuru Kira survived and is currently alive and well in the main series. His body was taken to Mayuri’s lab, where the Captain of the 12th Division operated on him and filled the hole in his torso with thick rods that provided him with stability. He reappeared when Lille Barro’s clones landed in the Seireitei and killed all of them. He was also seen in the sequels, having fully recovered.
The remainder of this article will give you a detailed overview of Izuru Kira’s fate in the Bleach series. You already know what happened and how it happened, so we will just bring you the details so you know the whole context. Be careful, though, as the article will contain many spoilers, so if you don’t know all the details, be careful how you approach the text.
And while Izuru Kira suffered a fatal attack, he was saved by Mayuri and is now alive and well
Kira comes from a lowly noble family; his parents died when he was still a small kid. During his training at the Shinigami Academy, he met and became friends with Momo Hinamori, Shūhei Hisagi, and Renji Abarai, so they spent a lot of time together. After graduating, he was assigned to the 5th Division with Momo Hinamori and Renji Abarai. After some time, he was transferred to the 4th Division until Gin Ichimaru was promoted to Captain of the 3rd Division, and Kira was transferred to that company.
Kira is very loyal to his friends and to his duties as Lieutenant, which turned out to be a mistake because although he is very good friends with Momo Hinamori, Kira showed that his loyalty to his Captain knows no bounds when Momo Hinamori attacked that same Captain, mistaking Gin for the alleged killer of Sousuke Aizen. Despite this attitude, he subsequently describes himself as a monster for attacking Momo Hinamori.
Kira makes his first appearance trying to find Renji, who is leaving a Lieutenants’ meeting to fight Ichigo Kurosaki. Kira plays an important role in Sousuke Aizen’s plan to betray Soul Society, although he has no knowledge of Aizen’s plan whatsoever and was, ultimately, used by Aizen, just like many of the Shinigami. His loyalty to Gin Ichimaru and his devotion to following orders were exploited both by Gin and Aizen.
Due to this, Kira later starts a fight against the 10th Division’s Lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto; although his Wabisuke seemingly gives him the upper hand against her, it is ultimately useless against Haineko’s ability to turn the blade into ashes, which is why Kira loses this battle.
After Gin’s involvement in Aizen’s betrayal is revealed, and Aizen flees, Kira reconciles with Matsumoto over a drinking session. The serious betrayal of his Commander’s trust obviously takes a toll on him, as he is both worried and frustrated. After Gin’s betrayal, he was named as caretaker of the 3rd Division until a new Captain was appointed (in the anime, he was relieved of these duties when Amagai was named as the new captain, but this small arc is not part of the canon). During this time, he was shown to have frequent sake-drinking meetings with Tetsuzaemon Iba, Yumichika Ayasegawa, and Ikkaku Madarame.
He later appears as one of the fighters defending Karakura Town from Aizen and his followers; he is one of the Shinigami assigned to defend the four pillars that keep Fake Karakura Stable. It comes to a fight between him and the Arrancar Abirama Redder.
He taunts Kira for his lack of enthusiasm for the fight and says that Gin probably became a traitor because he wanted to get rid of his cowardly Lieutenant, which makes Kira very angry. He manages to defeat Abirama by using Wabisuke to make his wings so heavy that he can no longer fly and then kills him by wrapping the rectangular blade of his Zanpakuto around his opponent’s neck and then beheading him.
Along with Shūhei Hisagi, he then rushes to the aid of Rangiku Matsumoto and Momo Hinamori against Ayon and immediately starts treating them since he used to be in the 4th Division; he is also a kido expert, so this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Fortunately, all of them survived this battle.
After Aizen’s downfall, he was finally relieved of his duties as provisional Captain, as Rojuro Otoribashi was, once again, reinstated as the Captain of the 3rd Division since the Visored reconciled with the Gotei 13 and some of them were reinstated (aside from Otoribashi, Shinji Hirako and Kensei Muguruma were reinstated as Captains, while Mashiro Kuna was also reinstated; later, Lisa Yadomaru will also become the Captain of the 8th Division).
The first time we see him later is the beginning of the invasion of Soul Society. At this point, the Quincys invaded Soul Society and Kira, and the 3rd, 5th, and 6th Seats of the 3rd Division were attacked by Sternritter “H” (“The Heat”), Bazz-B, who killed everyone in no time and even launched a fatal Heilig Pfeil right through Kira’s torso, seemingly killing him.
Kira was not seen for a long time, but we later found out that his body was taken to Mayuri, who filled the hole in his torso with thick rods that held his body together. After recovering enough, he finally returned to the battlefield near the end of the battle, when the clones of what was left of Lille Barro were scattered around Soul Society.
Faced with the strange birds, Kira promised to protect his allies and used Wabisuke to slay them all. In the “No Breathes from Hell” one-shot, he is seen killing one of the creatures from Hell, showing that he has, in the meantime, recovered completely.
And that is the story of Izuru Kira, one of the series’ most intriguing characters who, sadly, never got enough time in the spotlight to make a lasting impact, but the series fans definitely love him nevertheless.
