Coraline 2 Potential Release Date & Trailer: Is It Happening? (2023 Update)

You don’t have to be a fan of animated films to appreciate the brilliance that is Coraline. This stop-motion horror film based on Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name won many awards and high critical acclaim. The dark ominous ambiance mixed with oddly relatable themes of neglect, acceptance, and search for identity won over many fans in all age groups. Since the movie was released back in 2009, many fans are wondering if the sequel, Coraline 2, is coming out in 2023. So, does Coraline 2 have a set release date and trailer?

Coraline 2 is not coming out in 2023. As of January 2023 there still hasn’t been any confirmation regarding the second Coraline movie. It does not have a set release date or an official trailer. Most of the rumors, release dates, and trailers you can find online are fake. Neil Gaiman, the author of the book Coraline, confirmed that the sequel is not happening via Twitter (several times). He is focusing on other projects and feels that he can’t really top the success of the first book and a movie.

So now you know one thing, Coraline 2 is officially not happening. At least not yet, and based on the author’s various statements over the years, likely, it won’t happen ever. What was so special about the first Coraline Movie?

It was absolutely brilliantly executed. The attention to detail when it comes to animation was on another level completely. A perfect mix of childlike and ominous. Coraline has a sinister approach to visuals to perfectly reflect the underlying themes. Otherworld was rendered beautifully due to handmade sets and clashes of colors like vibrant blues and oranges against bland a colorless overall theme. But to not get too technical about this, except for the animation itself the source material was brilliant too.

The book Coraline is a children’s book first and foremost but it managed to resonate with everyone. The characters were fleshed out and relatable. It perfectly captured the theme of being a child and sometimes wanting to escape somewhere else in some fantasy land. It’s a bitter-sweet story about finding yourself and appreciating what you have. The grass is not always greener as Coraline first thought it was. The story is also about bravery, most important, being brave in the right moments when it counts the most, even when you’re afraid. It was a massive hit which is why 13 years later, a lot of fans are still asking for a sequel.

Is there a Coraline 2 coming out?

Unfortunately no, and the author Neil Gaiman confirmed it a couple of times. Most recently, this year, in March. Some fan tweeted to him a screenshot of Coraline 2 rumors with a caption of “is this real” and he replied with a simple and straightforward “no”.

A year before that, he tweeted that he was waiting for a story that can be at least as good or even better than the first one before making a sequel and it makes sense.

Since the first movie (and book) were massively popular and successful, he doesn’t want to ruin the legacy of Coraline by delivering content that was subpar in quality just for the sake of pleasing fans. Coraline 2 would undoubtedly bring in some serious money, it doesn’t seem like Neil Gaiman wants to risk his reputation as an author, no matter have many fans are disappointed. And besides, he is focused on other projects right now, like the adaptation of The Sandman.

Coraline 2 rumors and updates, are they real?

There have been many rumors, updates, and “trailers” for Coraline in the past. Unfortunately, they are all fake and mostly fan-made. None of the information that is presented as real or official is in no way connected to Neil Gaiman or Laika studios. So if you don’t hear it straight from the official channels, don’t believe it. Especially now that you know that likelihood of Coraline 2 happening is slim at best.

Coraline 2 possible release date and possible trailer release date

In February of this year, rumors were circling that the official release date of Coraline 2 is November 13th, and many sites covered it like it was an official. I have to disappoint you. Coraline 2 has no release date since it’s not happening. The author doesn’t want to tarnish the reputation that he’s built by creating a story that’s worst than the original. Some authors tend to do that and it doesn’t end well. It’s a smart logical choice. Even though we’re not personally a fan of his decision.

Coraline 2 is not happening in any official capacity and Neil Gaiman himself confirmed it, several times. There is no official release date, trailer, plot, or cast announcement. All we have left is to wait and hope that Neil Gaiman will manage to outdo himself and come up with a story as good as the original, but optimally better than the original. Till then we can look forward to his upcoming projects and rewatch the original movie I guess.
