DC Boss Says No One Tops James Gunn: ‘Greatest Superhero Filmmaker of Our Generation’

Warner Bros made a splash at CineEurope this week, showcasing their upcoming Superman movie, set to release in July. Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Theatrical Distribution, presented the studio’s international plans for the first time at the event.
The highlight was 30 minutes of exclusive footage from the new DC film, leaving attendees buzzing.
The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The footage included some clips previously shown at CinemaCon in April but featured fresh material revealed for the first time. A local musician kicked things off with an electric guitar rendition of the iconic Superman theme, energizing the crowd.
DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, unable to attend due to a global promotional tour starting in the Philippines, sent a video message. Safran emphasized the film’s importance, calling it the foundation of a new DC Universe.
He praised Gunn, who wrote and directed the movie, saying, “James is, for my money, the greatest superhero filmmaker of our generation.” Safran added, “I wouldn’t do any character without James. But it was when he called me and said, ‘I have a way in,’ that I really knew we were onto something.”
The story dives into Superman’s dual identity, balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Safran noted, “It spoke to me about what is it that makes us the people we are today.”
The film finds Clark Kent early in his career at the Daily Planet, having dated Lois Lane for about three months. Metropolis is a vibrant city where superheroes, villains, robots, and magic are commonplace. “It’s kind of like spotting a celebrity — you’re like, ‘Whoa, that’s pretty cool,’ not, ‘What did I just see?’” Safran explained.
Safran highlighted the casting, describing Corenswet and Brosnahan as ideal choices. “There was simply no doubt that David Corenswet embodied everything we were looking for in Superman and Clark Kent,” he said. “And when he and Rachel read together, they each elevated the other. You’re just like, ‘That’s Lois Lane.’” He stressed that the film centers on both Superman and Lois Lane, with Lois playing a key role.
Safran also teased Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie and slated for June 2026, hinting at more exciting DC projects ahead.
The emphasis on Lois Lane as an equal partner is a welcome change, and the casting seems spot-on. It’s exciting to see DC launching a new era with such confidence, but I’m curious if it will live up to the hype. What do you think about this reboot?
