DC Revealed New ‘Absolute Batman’ Logo & Some Fans Think It’s So Bad, They Petitioned James Gunn to Change It

A month ago, in an announcement video on DC’s YouTube channel, writers Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder unveiled their new comic line, Absolute Universe. Unlike The New 52, this initiative is designed to coexist with the existing DC universe rather than replace or retcon it.
All In is about inviting everybody in — the existing creators, some new creators, everything — to tell their best stories, and to begin them all at one point […] The idea is to create the greatest jumping-on point for you guys in many, many years.
The Absolute Universe, crafted by Darkseid, is a new alternate setting where DC invites writers and artists to reimagine iconic characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman from scratch. This universe will exist alongside the main DC timeline as part of a broader, ongoing narrative. The term “absolute” signifies the high prestige associated with these premium DC editions. Scott Snyder will write Absolute Batman, illustrated by Nick Dragotta, and describes this universe as more chaotic and dangerous, demanding that heroes be tougher and more resourceful.
Recently, new logos, character designs, and variant cover art have been revealed. While most aspects have been well-received, some fans are shocked by the new Batman logo and design, which they find notably disappointing.
The new logo features a design resembling a black brick with bat-like wingtips, ears, and a tail.
This version of Batman will be fundamentally different, primarily due to his origin. Fans will find a Dark Knight without the traditional wealth, mansion, or butler. The debut issue, colored by Frank Martin and lettered by Clayton Cowles, will highlight what makes this the ‘Absolute’ version of Batman.
While the concept of a reversed origin sounds intriguing, the design has received mixed reviews. The new Batman logo is bulky and confusing, with many fans joking that it resembles a brick and has been widely criticized. Discussions about the logo have been active online, particularly on Reddit and X, where the response has been overwhelmingly negative.
That’s an absolute garbage. How does it even suppose to be a bat? It is a brick!
Sucks. Looks like they just redrew an AI generated image by hand.
100% despicable. Whoever approved it needs to be fired asap!
Fans even went so far as to petition James Gunn to change the logo. While Gunn acknowledged the criticism and did not deny the logo’s flaws, he explained that he lacks the authority to make changes.
However, it’s not all negative—Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman designs have received considerable praise.
Absolute Batman #1 hits comic book stores on October 9th!
