In this article, we are going to talk about the head of the Ubuyashiki family, Kagaya, as we are going to explain what exactly happened to him in the series. Kagaya is suffering from a very dangerous illness, actually a curse, and in this article, you are going to find out everything you actually need to know about him and his curse.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Kagaya Ubuyashiki is a secondary character from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current head of the Ubuyashiki family and, thus, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps.
  • Kagaya is a very respected person in the series, as well as an influential one, despite the fact that he has no battle skills himself and is not a fighting member of the Demon Slayer Corps.
  • He is suffering from a deadly illness, which is actually a curse inflicted on his family due to the family’s blood relation to Muzan Kibutsuji, the original Demon.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki is the current head of the Ubuyashiki family, as of the Hashira Training Arc

What actually inspired us to come back to Kagaya was the situation in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training movie, where it was shown that Kagaya was sick and that he couldn’t even come to the Hashira meeting organized in his mansion; he was replaced by his wife but was nevertheless able to contact Lady Tamayo via his Kasugai Crow. So, who is he, and why is he so important in the first place?

Kagaya Ubuyashiki, whose family founded the Demon Slayer Corps, is the organization’s 97th head. He has the capacity to calm people down just by acting and speaking in a certain way. In addition, he has a certain level of foresight that helps him avoid bad outcomes and has helped him accumulate a sizeable sum of money and fortune. He is Muzan’s distant relative, and as a result of his family giving birth to a demon, a curse has been placed on the entire family, meaning that any child born into the family will perish young, but more on that later.

The Demon Slayer Corps was founded when a priest counseled his ancestor to redeem himself by committing his soul to battle demons just as the family line was about to vanish. None of his family members have survived past the age of thirty. Together with Tamayo, he devises a strategy wherein he chooses to martyr himself in an explosion in order to debilitate Muzan ahead of the decisive battle. And with this, the introduction is concluded; we can now talk about the illness.

His illness is actually a curse, which is a result of his family’s relation to Muzan

The Ubuyashiki Family has a long and important role in the history of the Demon Slayer lore. That much is obvious, and everything we have said up to this point confirms it. Due to their past, the fight against Muzan is very personal to the Ubuyashiki Family. Muzan Kibutsuji’s family members include the Ubuyashiki Family. Although Kagaya is obviously a very distant relative, one of Kagaya’s ancestors was once a close relative of Muzan.

The Ubuyashiki Family was cursed because their lineage produced the progenitor of all Demons. Every male child born into the family was also cursed to be born with an illness that would kill them before they reached adulthood. The Ubuyashiki Family went to see a priest in an attempt to break the curse, and the priest advised them to kill Muzan and force their male heirs to wed a priestly-selected woman.

This appeared to be effective because the Ubuyashiki children lived into maturity despite continuing to suffer from illness and passing away at a young age. For this reason, the Ubuyashiki Family wishes for Muzan’s death; however, if you believe that Muzan has no affection for them, you are mistaken. Muzan hated them even more, and he detested them for being weak. He could not care less that they were connected; in fact, it appeared that this knowledge made him detest them even more. This is what ultimately caused the feud between Muzan and the Ubuyashiki family, and it also explains the curse that affects the family.

The nature of the illness (curse) was never explained, but it seems to work like a genetic disorder, as it is passed down from one member of the Ubuyashiki family to their children. Of course, marrying diluted the effects of the curse to a certain degree, thereby increasing the lifespan of the Ubuyashiki children, but they still ended up being affected by the curse and dying. This is why Kagaya was not there during the meeting, as the illness was taking its toll on him, and he was unable to attend the meeting.

Of course, with Muzan’s disappearance, the curse would also be lifted, but that is another story for another time. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
