Disney has ended its partnership with the BBC to co-produce Doctor Who on Disney+, just three years after the streaming deal was announced.

The decision comes after disappointing ratings and mixed reactions to the latest seasons, including Jodie Whittaker’s final episodes and the early run of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor.

Sources speaking to Deadline said there were two main reasons for Disney’s move. The first involved Gatwa, who was expected to carry the legacy of previous stars like Matt Smith and David Tennant.

“There is more to that role than performing,” an insider said. “You have got to be an ambassador for the brand and embrace being that generation’s Doctor. Matt Smith and David Tennant fully understood the responsibility it carried.” The insider claimed Gatwa did not fully embrace the role or promote the show as expected.

The second factor, according to insiders, was the show’s approach to diversity and inclusion, which drew criticism in the United States. The series cast transgender actress Yasmin Finney, featured a gay kiss between Gatwa and Jonathan Groff, and included drag queen Jinkx Monsoon as a villain.

One source said the content was “too woke for Trump’s USA,” contributing to Disney’s decision to step away. These choices sparked debate among both American and BBC viewers, further affecting the show’s reception.

While the show continues on the BBC, Disney’s exit marks a major setback for Doctor Who’s global streaming ambitions. The series struggled to capture the same audience it once had under previous stars and is now facing questions about its future appeal internationally.

Disney dropping Doctor Who highlights how important both star power and audience perception are in modern streaming deals.

The show has tried to evolve with a more diverse cast, but it seems balancing fan expectations and broader cultural shifts can be tricky. Do you think Disney made the right call, or could Doctor Who have succeeded with more support? Share your thoughts in the comments.
