Ever since the TV adaptation of The Witcher premiered on Netflix, the streaming service had the formula for success so it’s no wonder that they’ve already expanded the franchise with an animated movie and a prequel mini-series which will premiere on Christmas, and there’s a lot more to come. But, one of the unpleasant surprises is that Henry Cavill will no longer star as Geralt of Rivia after Season 3, which is set to premiere next Summer.

Following Henry Cavill’s exit from the series, it was announced that Liam Hemsworth is set to take over the role in Season 4 and afterward. Still, Henry Cavill is still officially Geralt until Season 3. Since it’s not a secret that I love to talk about some banal details, let’s talk about one that probably takes the cake — Does Henry Cavill wear a wig in The Witcher series on Netflix?

Henry Cavill definitely wears a wig while playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. It’s known that Geralt is known for his long white hair, which is only one of Geralt’s identifiable segments. When you add the wig, many fans agreed that Cavill really looked like the ultimate Geralt. It’s hard to imagine how Liam Hemsworth will pull off that look when he takes over the role since we do not have the first look at his Geralt just yet.

Now that we’ve covered this detail, let’s see why the wig is vital in the Witcher series. If you’re interested in more, stay with us!

Why is the wig so important in The Witcher?

Using wigs is something that is pretty common for actors these days, especially when it’s about playing a character that is recognizable by long hair, which doesn’t look so common. That kind of character can be easily found in the fantasy genre. We remember how Orlando Bloom wore a wig for the role of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jason Isaacs has done the same for the role of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movie series, and let’s not forget all the Targaryens in House of the Dragon. These are only a few of countless examples that we can think of.

How Did Geralt Become a Witcher?

Geralt of Rivia is known as the White Wolf. Although there are some differences between incarnations of Geralt in the books, video games, and TV series, in every medium he appeared in, Geralt was, therefore, always recognizable for having loose white hair. Even though Netflix’s vision of Geralt doesn’t look so pale and doesn’t have as many scars as Geralt from the books and video games, the hair still needed to be as spot-on as possible. Both the showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Cavill previously talked about how it took some time to make a proper wig for the series.

“We tried several versions of a full white wig (and you can still see scenes of it in Ep 101, before the reshoots). It glowed on-screen, looking almost grandma blue under the lights. It was an abomination, and laughable. We added more dirt (that’s why it looks more grey) and some lowlights, and it took us months to get it to a place where we were happy with it. It’s definitely more silver now, but we didn’t want to give up calling him the White Wolf — which makes more sense as a nickname when we meet future Witchers, and see that none of their hair was impacted by the Trials.” — Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner of The Witcher (source: CinemaBlend)

“The wig went through an evolution. When we started the project, about a month and a half before shooting, the wig hadn’t even begun to be made yet. That’s a super short turnaround for a wig and my hairdresser hadn’t been brought on yet. When she did, the wig had already been finished, and it was a matter of just letting it evolve. She took it home, was recoloring it, making it look as real and as natural as possible. By the time she really got her hands on it, it looked incredible and I loved it. The hour and a half I spent in the chair working with it was the time — well, one, that I learned lines — that I transformed into character. Once the wig was on and the costume was on, makeup was done, contacts were in, I felt like Geralt. I was right there. All it took was to switch on the voice.” — Henry Cavill (source: The Hollywood Reporter)

Will Liam Hemsworth wear a wig in The Witcher series?

As we all know now, the upcoming third season of The Witcher will mark the final appearance of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The news was not received well by the fans, even though Cavill welcomed Liam Hemsworth as his successor. It’s for sure that Hemsworth will also need to wear a wig for the role, and considering that the wig needs to be as persuasive as it can get, it’s for sure that the team of hairdressers that works on the series will need to make a whole new wig for Hemsworth.

The third season of The Witcher is set to premiere in the Summer of 2023, and we can’t be sure if the series will be equally successful after that since there will be no Henry Cavill to carry it anymore. The fans surely aren’t happy, but only time will tell how will this big change in casting affect the statistics of the series. Before the third season, this Christmas, we’ll watch the prequel mini-series The Witcher: Blood Origin starring Michelle Yeoh.
