Erin Moriarty Cries as She Bids Farewell to ‘The Boys’ After Final Season: “The Tears Have Begun”

The final season of The Boys is done filming, and emotions are running high, especially for Erin Moriarty. The actress, known for playing Starlight, posted on Instagram to share how hard it was to say goodbye to the show and her castmates.

“Honestly, f** ‘don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’ The tears have begun. The posts are incoming. I said goodbye to most of my work family today and I’ll be ready to smile about it when I’m ready to smile about it. To my Boys fam: love you, c****. Forever.”

This was her way of expressing just how much the show meant to her. After five seasons, it’s officially over. The series is based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and it was developed for TV by Eric Kripke.

Kripke always intended for The Boys to last five seasons. Amazon renewed it in May 2024, and just a few weeks later, it was confirmed the fifth season would be the final one. Kripke called it the “gory, epic, moist climax” in a tweet.

He told both Deadline and Variety that he’s been planning this ending for years and wants to finish the story the right way. In his words, “It’s hard to land the plane. But I really want to land it right. Because if we do, people will say it was a great show. If we don’t, they’ll say it was good… until it s**t the bed.”

20 Best ‘The Boys’ Characters (Ranked)

Everyone is coming back for the last season. Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Karen Fukuhara, and the rest of the cast are all returning. Jensen Ackles is back too as Soldier Boy, but this time he has a much bigger part. Kripke revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 that they’ll be diving into his story with Homelander. He said there’s a lot of “father-son emotion” to explore.

Kripke didn’t hold back when talking about how intense this final season will be. He told GamesRadar+ and TV Guide that it’s going to be “super big, apocalyptic,” and that “there’s no guarantee who’s going to make it.” He added that some characters will die, and “anyone who dies in season five will richly deserve it.” Since there’s no more story after this, they’re going all out.

But for Moriarty, this year has been tough beyond just filming the last season. In early 2024, she became the target of a lot of hate online. People criticized her appearance and accused her of getting plastic surgery. She spoke out in a now-deleted Instagram post, saying:

“This is something I truly never anticipated writing. We’re all subject to levels of bullying throughout our lives but I am horrified, and I felt that I deserved to take a second to address these things. I am horrified by the reaction, the reductive assumptions, and the aforementioned video that is a primary example of such harassment. It’s broken my heart. You’ve broken my heart.”

That quote was first reported by StyleCaster. After posting it, she took a break from social media to take care of herself. Her co-stars didn’t stay quiet. Eric Kripke defended her, tweeting: “Be kind. If you can’t be kind, then eat a bag of d***s, f**k off to the sun & don’t watch The Boys, we don’t want you.”

Antony Starr showed support too, and Karen Fukuhara said in an interview, “I was really worried about her for a period of time. Nobody is bulletproof, even though I think she’s close to it.”

Luckily, things eventually calmed down. Moriarty seems to be doing better now, and she’s ending the series surrounded by people who care about her. As fans wait for the release of the final season, one thing’s clear, the cast went through a lot together, and they’re saying goodbye to something that changed all their lives.

No release date has been shared yet, but if Kripke and the team stick the landing, it’s going to be a wild ride to the end.
