‘Eternally Yours’ Episode 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Why Liz’s Secret About Jesse Changes the Coven

The latest installment, “The Mistake,” aired on October 22 and follows the coven as it throws an initiation party for a new vampire, while also revealing Jesse’s origin story. This ‘Eternally Yours’ recap and ending explained looks at how a guest list full of vampires exposes a secret Liz has kept from Jesse. Spoilers follow for everything that happens.

The series comes from ‘Ghosts’ creators Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and follows the vampire couple Charles and Liz, whose romance has gone stale after 500 years. The pilot ended with their daughter Emma’s human boyfriend, Max, being turned into a vampire, which changed the premise of the entire show.

The ‘Eternally Yours’ Recap and Max’s Initiation Party

Jeff Hiller guest stars as Aldrict, who arrives as the cousin of Drusilla. Cat Lemieux and Julian Richings are also among the guest stars, which makes clear that the coven’s world holds far more vampires than viewers might have expected.

When Aldrict looks at Liz and asks whether they have met, she insists they have not, with a look of apparent dread. He keeps listing places where they might have crossed paths, which hints that something is buried in her past.

The party itself begins with Max’s own request. As he continues his vampire research, Max asks for an initiation ceremony, and most of the coven agrees it is a good idea. The one dissenting voice is Jesse, who never had a ceremony of his own.

Jesse’s Origin Story and the Secret Behind the Title

A flashback to 1876 shows how Jesse was made part of the coven, tracing his path from a lowly farmhand to a powerful member of the undead. The creators had teased before the season began that Jesse’s version of how he became a vampire was not the real story.

The truth is less flattering to Liz. She had been a vampire for hundreds of years without ever hunting because it frightened her, and Charles did it on her behalf. She chose Jesse as her first kill because he had no family and would not be missed, but she did not drain enough blood, so she turned him instead. She never told him, which explains the episode title.

Liz confesses the truth to Max, and the show keeps up its habit of using historical flashbacks as comedic gags. The episode was written by Talia Bernstein and Sophia Lear and directed by Trent O’Donnell. The balance between farce and a genuinely sore emotional wound is what gives the story its weight.

The Ending Explained as the Plague Cuts the Party Short

Max’s new and uncontrolled telepathy broadcasts his thoughts to the whole room, and he nervously projects the very idea he is trying to suppress, that Jesse was a mistake. Jesse begins to believe the family was never real and that Liz and Charles were pretending so he would not find out. Liz did grow to love him, but she does not know how to earn his forgiveness.

The solution is a simple one. Jesse never received a proper vampire welcome party, so Liz suggests a double celebration with Max that acknowledges him as family out loud. Jesse also picks up the nickname “Jesse the Iceman” thanks to his love of blocks of ice and ‘Top Gun.’ One reviewer described the shared party as a sweet moment that reinforces the idea of chosen family.

Then the crisis arrives. Phyllis returns early from her spa weekend with bubonic plague, caught because Max blew dust off one of Charles’ old vampire books. Charles ends the party quickly to protect her, and in doing so he also defends Liz, which shows his marriage is not as lifeless as it looked.

Emma also faces her own fears, since she knows she will spend eternity with a boy she has known for only six weeks. By the end of the episode she acknowledges that she is Max’s girlfriend, and the two move forward together.

Critical Reception and Where the Coven Goes Next

In its review, TV Fanatic called the episode the series at its best, noting that the jokes planted in the first half all pay off in the second. The same review praised Hiller for blending in perfectly with the other party guests.

The episode leaves one thread dangling. Aldrict looks like a troublemaker who is not finished yet. The next episode, “Halloween,” airs Thursday, October 29, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

That episode has the coven fearing a werewolf attack after Max inadvertently uses an ancient protective relic as a candy bowl for trick-or-treaters and it goes missing. Given how much damage a single dusty book caused here, the concern feels well earned.

Episodes air on CBS at 8:30 p.m. ET and PT, and Paramount+ Premium subscribers can watch live or on demand, while Essentials subscribers have to wait until the following day. With Jesse still absorbing what Liz admitted and Aldrict still circling the coven, readers who think Jesse should forgive Liz for how he really became a vampire can make their case in the comments.
