Eva Mendes Is Headed to a Galaxy Far, Far Away in ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’

Eva Mendes has spent years living far from the Hollywood spotlight. The actress has been retired from films for roughly a decade, though she did voice a cameo in an episode of ‘Bluey’ back in 2021. Her last big-screen credits were ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ in 2012 and ‘Lost River’ in 2014.

That made any hint of a comeback feel like a long shot, especially in a franchise as massive as ‘Star Wars’. Meanwhile, her husband Ryan Gosling has been preparing to headline one of Lucasfilm’s most anticipated upcoming films. The movie is billed as an all-new standalone adventure with an original story set in a period of time never before explored in ‘Star Wars’.

Now, it looks like the couple will share a galaxy. Knight Edge Media says it can exclusively confirm that Mendes will appear in ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ alongside her real-life husband. The report, shared widely by the account Star Wars Holocron, has fans buzzing about the surprise addition.

According to the same report, Mendes is expected to have only a minor role as an intergalactic cantina owner. It is a small part, but one with plenty of room for fun in a universe famous for its colorful watering holes. The outlet also noted that fans have speculated she might return for a ‘Ghost Rider’ project, though she is not currently expected to reprise her role as reporter Roxanne Simpson.

This is not the first time Mendes has been linked to the film. When production kicked off, scooper DanielRPK reported that she would play the wife of Gosling’s character. At the time, one outlet guessed that a minor cameo could explain why her involvement had not been officially announced.

The cantina detail appears to line up with a later leak. MakingStarWars claimed that Mendes plays a fully glammed-out cantina owner named Belle. That description differs from the earlier claim of her playing Gosling’s on-screen wife, which suggests the earlier rumor may have missed the mark.

One caveat still applies. Mendes was never included in Lucasfilm’s official cast announcement, so her involvement has not been confirmed by the studio. Until Lucasfilm says otherwise, the report should be treated as a strong scoop rather than an official announcement.

The official cast is already stacked. Alongside Gosling, it includes Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams. Shawn Levy directs from a script by Jonathan Tropper, with Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing.

Levy has been open about what this project means to him. He reportedly flew to London in the mid-2010s just to meet Kennedy and share his love of the franchise. That kind of passion could explain why the production is leaning into the franchise’s playful side, from rogue heroes to cantina regulars.

Speaking of heroes, leaked details paint Gosling’s character as a familiar type. One leak compares his protagonist to a rogue in the mold of Han Solo, and says the on-screen chemistry among the cast is really strong. If that holds, a cantina owner could be exactly the kind of colorful face such a character crosses paths with.

For fans, the real appeal is seeing a famously private actress pop up in a galaxy far, far away. A blink-and-you-miss-it appearance may be all Mendes needs to make the movie feel like a family affair. ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on May 28, 2027.
