Every Unclaimed Dragon in ‘House of the Dragon’ Revealed

The recent episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ presented us with one very real problem, both sides are losing dragons and dragon riders. Despite House Targaryen and dragons being quite numerous at this point in history, they are losing numbers fast. After all, it was Dance of the Dragons that singlehandedly led to the extinction of this magnificent species in Westeros and beyond.

The Blacks lost Rhaenys and Meleys, one of the fiercest dragons and fiercest most experienced dragon rides. The Greens so far lost none, but both Aegon and Sunfyre will never join the battle again – at least if the show follows the book. At the end of the episode, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon points out that they have the dragons, but they lack “the personnel” to ride them and inquiries whether some Targaryens that married into other noble families would be willing and able to claim dragons.

Rhaenyra decides to look into history books, to track down some possible Targaryens, and we are already familiar with Dragonseeds – bastards of House Targaryen and Velaryon who might be able to claim dragons. But how many unclaimed dragons there are in the first place? Let’s see.

1. Seasmoke

Seasmoke was formerly the dragon of Laenor Valeryon, Rhaenyra’s former husband and the son of Rhaenys and Corlys Velaryon. Both the book and the show left Laenor’s fate open-ended, with the show heavily implying that Laenor lived and the book implying that he died. Nevertheless, it is strange how Rhaena never tried to claim her uncle’s dragon, despite everyone at that time believing that he was dead.

However, Seasmoke was eventually claimed by Velayron dragonseed Addam of Hull, whose brother Alyn of Hull will eventually take over the title of Lord of the Tides.

2. Silverwing

Silvering was a dragon of Alysanne Targaryen and one of the oldest dragons in Westeros of that time, however, it long remained riderless after the death of his former rider. Even during the Dance of Dragons, the dragon was avoided due to its docile nature. However, at one point the need for fresh dragons and dragonriders skyrocketed leading to dragonseed Ulf the White being able to claim it.

3. Sheepstealer

Sheepstealer was an untamed dragon living on Dragonstone that was mostly left to roam the area beacuse he was not dangerous for shepherds. He was however dangerous for sheep as he had a taste for mutton and this is how dragonseed Nettles, managed to tame him, by abusing this weakness. Sheepstealer was never exactly described as being fierce or majestic as he was “skinny and brown,” but hey, a dragon is a dragon.

Nettles was reportedly eventually Daemon’s lover and Rhaenyra at one point ordered her death.

4. Vermithor

Vermithor was teased in season 1, but so far we have not seen the massive and ancient dragon. Vermithor was a dragon of Jaehaerys I, but has been riderless for years now and has refused claims. Vermithor was eventually claimed by another bastard, Hugh Hammer.

5. Cannibal

Cannibal’s name is self-explanatory as he was a massive and completely wild dragon that had a tendency to attack and feast on other smaller dragons. Many riders attempted to claim him, and many lost their lives attempting. Even as Dance of Dragons raged on and the Blacks desperately needed new dragon riders, Cannibal remained untamed.

6. Grey Ghost

Grey Ghost was a pale grey-white dragon, named for his shy nature and ability to hide in clouds and mist. Along with other wild dragons on Dragonstone, dragonseeds tried to claim it but all failed due to being unable to locate it. Eventually, Grey Ghost was found dead on the shores of the isle, at first Cannibal was blamed but the dragon that killed Grey Ghost was actually Sunfyre.
