Ewan McGregor And Hayden Christensen Still Want ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 But Disney Isn’t Budging
Star Wars fans have spent the better part of four years hoping for more chapters set between ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope’. The Disney Plus era of the franchise has produced everything from ‘Andor’ to ‘Ahsoka’, but few entries landed with the emotional weight of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, the 2022 limited series that finally reunited Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen on screen. That reunion left a lingering question hanging over the galaxy far, far away, one that keeps resurfacing every time either actor sits down for a new interview.
McGregor has never been shy about wanting to return to the role that made him a household name decades ago. Ever since the show wrapped its finale, fans have wondered whether a follow-up season could happen, and McGregor has fed that speculation at conventions, junkets and press tours ever since. He has floated ideas ranging from a Clone Wars era prequel to filling in the mysterious decade Obi-Wan spends in hiding before Alec Guinness takes over the role in the original trilogy.
That ongoing campaign is exactly why a recent update, shared online by entertainment account CoveredGeekly and credited to Entertainment Weekly, is generating fresh buzz. According to that report, McGregor confirmed that he and Anakin Skywalker actor Hayden Christensen both remain interested in bringing ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ back for another season. The catch, as McGregor made clear, is that neither actor believes the project is anywhere close to actually happening.
McGregor said he was not aware of any real progress being made toward a second season, despite his continued enthusiasm for returning. He reportedly made the comments while promoting other projects, a reminder that these updates tend to surface almost by accident whenever a journalist asks the inevitable Star Wars question. It’s a familiar pattern for McGregor, who has been fielding the same query in one form or another since the first season premiered.
Lucasfilm has offered similarly noncommittal responses over the years. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously stated that a second season was not in active development, though she added that she never says never given how well received the show was and how much director Deborah Chow accomplished with it. Kennedy has also acknowledged that everyone involved, including McGregor and Christensen, had such a strong experience making the show that the idea of continuing it has come up internally, even if nothing concrete followed.
Part of the hesitation may stem from how ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ was originally positioned. The series was marketed from the start as a limited series, a classification that typically signals a contained, self-sufficient story rather than an ongoing show. Christensen, meanwhile, has stayed active in the franchise elsewhere, having already reprised Anakin Skywalker for ‘Ahsoka’, which follows his former apprentice Ahsoka Tano and has already been renewed for a second season.
Given how central both actors remain to the modern Star Wars conversation, it’s easy to see why fans keep clinging to every scrap of hope, even when the actors themselves are the ones tempering expectations.
