Final Fantasy XVI Developers Might Be Hinting at Switch 2 Version According to Rumors

Square Enix might be eyeing a new platform for Final Fantasy XVI, and it could be Nintendo’s next console. During a recent livestream, two of the game’s key developers, producer Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro, joked that Nintendo was the only place left for the game to go. This comment, though brief, quickly got fans talking.

The moment was highlighted by social media user Genki_JPN and has sparked new speculation about whether Final Fantasy XVI could arrive on the rumored Switch 2. Although Square Enix hasn’t confirmed anything yet, the idea of the game landing on Nintendo’s future hardware doesn’t seem far-fetched, especially given how the company is already preparing other big Final Fantasy titles for that platform.

Right now, Square Enix is focused on bringing Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade to the Switch 2. This upgraded version of the 2020 remake includes better graphics and extra content like Episode INTERmission, which follows ninja Yuffie Kisaragi on a mission in Midgar. The game is planned for release this winter.

There’s also another title in the pipeline—Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, coming this September. It updates the original strategy RPG with new voice acting, improved menus, added difficulty options, and features like autosave and faster battles. However, the upcoming version won’t include the content from the PSP’s War of the Lions, such as extra job classes, new cutscenes, or multiplayer mode.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XVI is already available on PlayStation 5 and PC. It also recently launched on Xbox Series X|S, though reports from Pure Xbox suggest sales on that platform haven’t been strong.

This isn’t the first time Yoshi-P has mentioned Nintendo. He’s talked before about wanting to bring Final Fantasy XIV Online to a Nintendo system. While nothing is official yet, these recent comments make it clear that Square Enix is at least thinking about expanding its presence on Nintendo’s next console.

If Final Fantasy XVI does land on the Switch 2, it would be a big deal for fans who want to play modern Final Fantasy games on Nintendo hardware. It looks like Square Enix is more open than ever to exploring new platforms.

Personally, I’d love to see Final Fantasy back on a Nintendo system in a big way. What about you? Would you play Final Fantasy XVI on Switch 2? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
