Forget Telepathy: The Absurd Ashley Superpower Colby Minifie Actually Pitched for ‘The Boys’
When ‘The Boys‘ first introduced Ashley Barrett as a harried Vought publicist barely surviving on panic and proximity to power, few could have predicted she would end up being one of the most unexpectedly compelling characters in the entire series. Colby Minifie brought something genuinely irreplaceable to the role, turning what was initially a small recurring part into a series regular arc that stretched across all five seasons.
The cliffhanger that closed Season 4 set the internet ablaze when Ashley, upon learning she was on Homelander’s kill list along with everyone else at Vought who had incriminating knowledge, made a desperate play and injected herself with Compound V. The last image of Ashley that season was her screaming on the floor with her wig fallen off as the substance began tearing through her body, leaving audiences with absolutely no idea what she would become.
Well before the writers locked in what Ashley’s ability would actually be, Minifie had been actively pitching ideas, and she confirmed that one of her proposals was both deeply specific and magnificently unhinged. The actress described a version of Ashley who develops acid urine, stores it in balloons, and then engineers a custom catsuit with a prosthetic attachment to help her aim it in combat, a character she had already named She-Wee. The pitch was rejected, which is arguably one of the great “what ifs” in superhero television history.
What the show ultimately gave Ashley was something far more psychologically rich. As revealed in ‘The Boys’ Season 5, she gained telepathic powers and grew a second sentient face on the back of her head, a conscience-like presence that could read minds and whisper truths Ashley would rather ignore. Minifie had previously told TV Guide she always believed the power had to be humiliating for Ashley specifically, and in a darkly poetic way, a second face literally judging her from behind delivered exactly that.
Before the season aired, Minifie told Entertainment Tonight that she felt the power the writers ultimately chose was perfect for her character, adding she was genuinely grateful Ashley got to become a supe at all. The dual-face ability, which fans quickly took to calling Bashley, became a centerpiece of Ashley’s final season arc in ways that purely offensive powers like acid balloons probably never could have.
That arc paid off in genuinely spectacular fashion. Using Bashley’s psychic capabilities, Ashley helped The Boys gain access to the White House during the climactic confrontation with Homelander, making her instrumental in bringing him down. It was a remarkable turn for a character who spent most of the series as a corporate survivor with no power of her own.
After Homelander’s defeat, Ashley briefly ascended to the presidency and held a press conference taking full credit for the operation, before Congress moved swiftly to impeach her and she was arrested for treason along with a range of other charges connected to Vought. She ended the series alive but headed for a lifetime behind bars, which is a fate that somehow feels both fitting and bittersweet for a character who survived everything ‘The Boys’ threw at her.
If you had to choose between acid balloon warfare and a psychic conscience growing out of your skull, which version of Ashley would you rather have watched take on Homelander in that White House showdown?
